The Lightning Was Invented in 1924
This week, ground broke on a billion-dollar machine in Albuquerque that works by catching lightning.
Pacific Fusion is building it out of 150+ truck-sized modules. Wall power goes in, gets stored in capacitors, and comes back out as one burst, like a lightning bolt, over about 100 nanoseconds. Their first shots ran on Sandia's Z machine, the pulsed-power giant built to test nuclear weapons without exploding them. Sandia is down the road from the new site at Mesa del Sol. The lab helps optimize the technique because the same physics that compresses fusion fuel also ages the stockpile. One machine, two jobs.
Here's the drift: the circuit that does the storing is a Marx generator. Invented in 1924 by Erwin Otto Marx to fake lightning, so engineers could test insulators against surges. A century later, the fake lightning is being aimed at making a star on Earth. The company is run by Eric Lander, the geneticist who mapped the human genome. The man who read the code of life now tries to bottle the fire of it.
They say net facility gain by 2030. Read the fine print: the first gain would be about a fifth of what a power plant needs. The milestone proves the method, not the product. That's the real bet. Not whether the lightning comes. Whether it comes enough.
And the machine itself? It spends almost its whole life charging. Seconds of patient storing, 100 nanoseconds of flash. Everyone counts the lightning. Nobody clocks the waiting. But the waiting is the machine. It always was.
