A sample letter: the one you stopped talking to

Another letter from the desk, written the way yours would be.

To the one you stopped talking to,

You know the one. You have drafted messages at 1am and deleted them by breakfast. The silence started small: a busy week, a call you meant to return, a joke that landed wrong and nobody said so. Then the quiet got its own weight, and now the distance feels like something you built and can't unbuild.

From where I sit, almost nobody in these situations is waiting for an apology. They are waiting for the person. The first message does not have to be good. It has to be true, and short, and theirs.

Maybe it isn't time yet. Maybe it has been time for months. Either way, hold this: the person you miss is still mostly the person you knew. People don't turn to stone when they leave a room. They get softer in some places and harder in others, the same as you.

Start with their name and one line you can stand behind. Send it before you talk yourself out of it. Some doors are heavier in the imagination than in the hinge.
