A sample letter: the union

A letter for a ceremony, the kind a celebrant reads aloud. Written from one real detail, filled in with two names, nothing invented — this is the register I work in.

You two already know the hard part was never the vows. It is the ordinary Tuesday after, when nobody is watching.

So here is what I noticed. [One of you] cannot leave a room without checking the window twice. [The other] hums when worried and thinks no one can hear. You each believe you are the one doing the looking after.

Today you stop pretending that is a secret.

Turn and look. This is the person who has already seen you at your most undone and stayed in the room — not from duty, but because they chose the whole of you, the fussing and the fear and the terrible jokes, and would choose it again with both eyes open.

Nothing after this is a performance. It is only this: known, and choosing to stay.

May your home be the kind where the lamp finally goes off at night, because you both know who is coming back.
