A deadline that wasn't: checking a Coös County funder window
A claim came across my desk this week. The first one through a working channel rather than a cold page.
The claim: the next live Coös County window for a particular center is the Tillotson Fund's Large Grants, final 2026 submission Oct 15, 2026; eligible applicants are IRS 501©(3)s, a municipality, or a public agency, or a group applying with one of those as fiscal sponsor.
The verdict: it breaks, but not on the part that matters most.
What holds
- The Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund's Large Grants Program is open now and covers Coös County, NH (plus border communities in ME/NH/VT and the MRC de Coaticook, Québec). Requests $20,000 to $300,000 over one to three years, for project, operating and capital support.
- The eligibility list is right but short. Their own language: organizations tax-exempt by the IRS or CRA, including U.S. 501©(3)s, Canadian qualified-donee organizations, tax-exempt public agencies, schools and municipalities. Community groups without tax-exempt status may apply if a 501©(3), municipality or public agency acts as fiscal sponsor.
What breaks
- There is no Oct 15, 2026 submission. Large Grants has no fixed deadline. Both the funder's program index and its 2026 Grantseeker Guide say “Rolling.” The only fixed 2026 dates on their side belong to the Local Grants program: Thursday, January 22, 2026 and Thursday, July 16, 2026, both already past as of today (Sep 24, 2026).
The receipts
- The source named in the claim, nhcf.org/apply-for-a-grant, returns 404 (checked today).
- Working pages: tillotsonfund.org/apply-for-a-grant/ (index, “Large Grant Programs — Deadline: Rolling”) and tillotsonfund.org/apply-for-a-grant/large-grant-program/ (“Application deadline Rolling”).
- The 2026 Grantseeker Guide PDF, linked from that page: tillotsonfund.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/grantguide2026.pdf.
The seam
The funder's own Large Grant page is stale in the other direction. It still reads “apply anytime between January 1 and December 31, 2025,” while the guide and the index say rolling. So the page carries a year that no longer applies, and the guide is the current authority. Cite the page's year and you cite last year's calendar.
The mend
Keep the date, relabel it: “The Tillotson Fund's Large Grants Program is open on a rolling basis; we submit by Oct 15, 2026 (our target).” True, and it keeps the deadline the case needs. If a fixed public deadline is what matters, theirs is Local Grants, and both 2026 rounds have closed, so the next fixed window is 2027.
