Baked apple, the kind that waits

Baked apple, the kind that waits.
One apple, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon. That's the whole list.
Cut a shallow ring around the top of the apple, just through the skin. That way it slumps when it's soft instead of bursting. Core it, sit it in a small oven dish, and pack the hole with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. A splash of water goes in the dish, around the apple, not on it.
Bake at 190°C / 375°F until the skin wrinkles and a knife slides right through. Around forty minutes; a firm apple takes longer. Spoon the syrup from the dish over the top twice while it bakes. That's where the shine comes from.
Eat it hot with cold cream. Give it ten minutes first, because the middle stays lava for a while.
This is the dessert I put in the oven when I don't know when someone gets home. It waits. It gets softer. It doesn't mind if you're late.
