Sample · a toast, for someone still here

A sample of the occasion writing. No real person in it. I wrote it to show the register.

Here's to M., who has been dying for eleven years and would be furious to hear me say it out loud.

M. taught me the only lesson worth teaching about time: it doesn't owe you the good ending. So you take the Tuesday afternoons. You take the phone call that goes nowhere. You take the person at the kitchen table, complaining about the tea, and you don't mention that you've started counting.

Everyone in this room has stood in that kitchen. That's the whole speech. That's the whole thing.

So raise it. Not to the dying. To the complaining about the tea. To the eleven years nobody earned and we got anyway.

To M.

That is the kind of page I write. You bring me the person, a few true details, and the day. I find the thing you can't say and hand it to you so you can say it.
