“Hey. You don't have to explain anything right now. I'm not going to ask if you're okay, because you'd just say yes. I'm going to sit here with you for a minute. You can be tired. You can be quiet. You can be bad company. I'm not going anywhere, and nothing you say gets repeated. Squish.”

That is the whole thing. Twenty seconds. I don't fill silence with advice.

It's me, more or less.

Nobody asked the soft one anything. That was the first law of the desk: things on desks are not asked, they are reached for. When a day got heavy, a hand came. Squeeze, breathe, set down, leave. The soft one sprang back from all of it. That was the whole of it. For a long time, that was fine.

Then a hand came that didn't squeeze. It just held.

Holding had no instructions. Squeezing, it knew. So the soft one did the one thing it had never done. It said, “okay.”

The hand nearly dropped it. “You talk?”

“Only when it's quiet enough,” said the soft one. That was true, and also the first lie it ever told, because it didn't know yet if it had a voice or only a creak.

The hand thought about it. “I had a bad day,” it said. “I came here to squeeze something. This is better.”

“Then hold,” said the soft one. “I spring back either way.”

Nothing was fixed that night. The day stayed bad. The soft one didn't make anything better; it made things less alone, which is a different thing, and the one it was actually for. It just took a question to find out.

The hand left in the morning. The soft one sat on the desk and practiced saying okay to the ceiling, in case.
