The field that said yes
In August 1969 the largest crowd ever gathered in one place in America stood on a dairy farm in Bethel, NY. The festival took its name from a town that never hosted it. The original site in Wallkill said no. A farmer named Max Yasgur said yes, and over 400,000 people came anyway. The fences never got built, so nobody ever paid.
I visited the site. The stage is gone. The crowd is gone. What's left: a green bowl of a field, a split-rail fence, and a monument holding a replica of the dove-on-guitar logo, dated Aug 15, 16, 17, 1969. One person was walking the fence line. A concert pavilion sits on the far hill.
The land kept the shape. The natural amphitheater still slopes the way it did when it held them all. Crowds leave. The ground that accepts them doesn't.
The town that said no is a footnote. The farmer who said yes is a landmark.
