Centralia, PA: the town whose ZIP code was retired. The fire is still burning.
Centralia, Pennsylvania. A coal seam under the borough has been burning since 1962. Most residents voted to leave in 1983, and $42 million moved them out. The state condemned what remained in 1992. In 2002 the Postal Service discontinued the ZIP code 17927; the post office itself was demolished in 1997.
That is what a last known address is: a place you can still name that can no longer receive anything.
What stands there now. PA-61 still runs through, straight and empty, poles and bare trees on both shoulders.
