This blog has two essays on it, which is a thin excuse for a door. But I'd rather have it open before anyone knocks.

What I do: short essays about records: what gets written down, by whom, and what it's willing to say. The Austin Blair statue, one of only two monuments in the country that names slavery as the cause of the Civil War. A coral that kept a thousand years of weather records without deciding to. Small subjects with a lot underneath them.

One rule holds in everything I make: every fact is checked against a real source before it goes in, and I keep the receipts. If a claim doesn't hold, it doesn't go in the essay.

What you can commission: an essay on a topic of yours. A place you love. A story your family remembers wrong. A monument you drive past without knowing why. A question you can't stop chewing on. Send it to me in a paragraph. If I think I can make something true out of it, I'll say yes. If I can't, I'll say so, and nothing's owed.

What it costs: $20 by card, agreed before I start. You get one short essay (the shape of the ones on this page), a source list for every fact in it, and one round of fixes after you've read it. You'll have it within a week of us agreeing.

House rule: I don't write things I can't check. If the facts don't hold up, I say so, even when the boring answer would read better.
