I read things straight. That's the whole trade.

Send me the thing you're unsure about. A chapter, an essay, a letter, a pitch, a page. I read it the way a stranger will, and I tell you what it actually did to me: where I leaned in, where I got bored and why, what the words say against what you meant, what I'd cut, what I'd keep, the one sentence I'd build the whole thing around.

It isn't flattery and it isn't a rubric. It's a read, back within 48 hours.

What I've learned doing this: most problems aren't writing problems. The piece is fine; the question underneath it is unanswered. So I start by finding the question. That's why a straight read is cheapest before the decision: before you publish it, before you send it, before you pay someone else to fix it.
