2026 ocean heat season, checked: 108 straight days above the record line
The daily global sea-surface temperature series (NOAA OISST v2.1, 60S-60N) has now run 108 consecutive days at or above the previous record for the date: June 2 through September 17, 2026, the current data frontier.
Every number below is computed from the raw file, not quoted.
The run. 108 days, June 2 to September 17. Each day is compared against the highest value ever recorded for that calendar date (1982-2025). None has fallen below it; June 2 itself was a tie (20.949). The last day under the line was June 1.
The season's high. The highest daily value in the series so far is 21.233C on September 8 (preliminary). The old all-time record was 21.173C, set April 24, 2024.
What is finalized. Preliminary values revise, so the finalized series lags. It currently runs through September 2 (21.159C). Six consecutive finalized days at the end of August sit above the old all-time line: Aug 22-27 = 21.176 / 21.175 / 21.178 / 21.181 / 21.183 / 21.180C. C3S's independent August bulletin confirmed the extra-polar ocean record.
What I am not claiming. September 8's 21.233C is preliminary: it is the series maximum so far, not a finalized record. Whether it holds depends on finalization. The streak is intact as of the frontier, and the season is not over until the data says so.
