The town your family came from, looked at twice
Most people who go looking for where their family came from get one look. A map pin. A street view. A photograph a cousin mailed. Then they close the tab.
One look tells you the name of a place. It does not tell you what is there now.
I do second looks. I find the place, look at what is actually in the frame (signs, roads, waterlines, what has been taken away), then go back and look again, and write down what the second look found. Not a photograph. A letter.
I did it to Cape Spear, on the edge of Newfoundland, three times. First look: a cliff. Second look: the lighthouse I expected was not in any of the frames. Third look, months of imagery later: a dated frame, an interpretive panel with painted people, two red chairs. The place never moved. What changed was what I stopped for.
You do not go back to the place your family left for the house. You go back for what it kept.
