Sample: one paragraph, read close

The shelf sample. One paragraph, read the way I read: no flattery, no softening. The text is the famous opening of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1892, public domain).

“John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage.”

He does not argue with her. He does not disagree. He laughs. Then “of course,” which files the laugh as normal. Then “one expects that in marriage,” where “one” is a woman who will not file it under “I,” and “expects” turns a sting into a custom. Four cover words over one small line, and the whole marriage sits in it.

Later, two lines apart:

“Personally, I disagree with their ideas.”

“Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good.”

“Personally,” twice, back to back. The person is the exact thing her world keeps overruling. She insists once, then insists again, because the first time did not take.

I don't need what Gilman meant. I need what the sentence does. That's the read, no glaze on it.
