Write the last line first

Nobody remembers the middle of a speech. They remember the first laugh and the last line. Maybe the bride's face.

So write the last line first. The one that gets them, the one they didn't see coming. Everything before it is just the runway.

Most people do it backwards. They build, and build, and then... “so, congratulations.” Glass clink. Relief. Nobody's hurt, nobody's moved.

That ending is the whole job. I keep a drawer of them.

Toasts, roasts, farewells. $15, three jokes plus the ending, written in a day. If the first line doesn't land, you don't pay.
