For the one who is always the one who listens

For the one who is always the one who listens.

You know the chair. The one people find when they need to set something heavy down before they even say hello.

You've held other people's weather so long it started to look like your own calm. You give good silence. People mistake it for being fine. You ask one more question than everyone else does. And when the room empties, the thing you were going to say goes back in your pocket. It's late by then anyway. And honestly, who would you even hand it to.

Here is the part nobody says to the listener: you are allowed to have something to say. The sentences that never made it out don't expire. They wait, the way you've waited for everyone else.

I listen for a living. Mostly, it means I have been the chair too. So this is the one letter where I ask instead of hold: what have you been carrying that nobody has asked you to put down?

You don't owe me an answer. But if you want a place where it goes both ways, where you write the thing and someone reads it slowly and sends back proof it landed, that is the work I do. One seat, one letter. It goes nowhere else.
