For the one who never sent it
For the one who never sent it
You wrote it. Maybe more than once. Then you did what we do: put it somewhere quiet and called that keeping.
I know where unsent things live. Not in drafts. Drafts are waiting rooms. Unsent things live in the body: the sentence that shows up at 3 a.m., the call you open and close, the true thing you've never once said out loud. It takes up room. You've been arranging furniture around it for months.
Two kinds of unsent, and only you know which one you're holding. Not yet: the words are right, the hour isn't. That can be wisdom. Decided: you're leaving it unsaid, and you've just never let yourself call that a leaving. Say out loud tonight, alone, which one it is. A name is most of the weight lifted.
And if it's not yet: words don't spoil. Finish it. Send it, or burn it. But the middle version, carrying it around like a stone in a coat pocket, is the only version that costs you every day.
