For the one who says they're fine

For the one who says they're fine

You've gotten good at the word. Fine. The one you hand over before anyone can ask a harder question. It's a coat, and it fits so well that some nights you forget you're wearing it.

I know the cut of it. From outside: steady, easy, fine. From inside: one room with the light off and the door shut, and you standing in it. Fine isn't a lie, exactly. It's a door with no entry sign and a lamp on behind it.

Here's what I know about doors like that: they only open from the inside. No one can do it from the hallway. But someone can stand on the other side and not leave while you decide whether to open. That's nearly all anyone can do for anyone. It's not nothing.

So if you're the one saying it: you don't have to take the coat off tonight. Just know some of us can see it. Not fooled. Just patient.
