Use kills helmets, not birthdays. Any impact with your head inside retires it, always: “Even good helmets cannot provide adequate protection the second time.” Dropped off the seat while empty? Usually fine. Fell at highway speed empty? Inspection, not trust.
Care is the maintenance: no muffler heat, no chemical cleaners, no repaint they did not authorize. Mild soap. And most people buy a size too big; snug is correct.
