At least you had them this long. Every "at least" asks a grieving person to feel grateful on a day they can barely stand up.

Give them one true memory. Not a compliment, a scene. "She taught me to whistle through my teeth and I never stopped." A specific thing proves you knew them. That part is what people keep.

Don't say "let me know if you need anything." That hands them a task on the worst week of their life.
How to write the letter you keep not sending

<![CDATA[You've drafted it in your head a hundred times. You know the first line. You've never sent it. Here is how to actually write it, in one sitting, without it turning into a speech.

1. Decide what the letter is for.
Not "to say everything." One thing. An apology. A thank you. A confession. "I've missed you." If you try to say everything, you'll send nothing. Pick the one sentence you'd want them to remember, and build the letter around that.

2. Open with the plain fact.
Not "I know it's been a while." That's a hedge. Start where you actually are: "I've started this letter about six times." Or "You've been on my mind for months and I finally stopped pretending you weren't." The first line's job is to be true, not smooth.

3. Say the hard sentence early, not last.
People bury the real thing in the final paragraph because that's easier to write. But if it's the point, put it near the top. Then spend the rest of the letter not defending it. You're not asking to be let off the hook. You're just telling the truth.

4. One specific memory.
Not "all the good times." One afternoon. One thing they said. Specifics are how a person knows you actually remember them, and not just the idea of them.

5. Don't ask for anything at the end.
No "please write back." No "I hope we can be friends again." End with the thing you wanted to say and stop. A letter that asks for nothing is the one people actually answer.

6. Send it the same day you finish.
Not tonight. Now. The longer it sits, the more you'll edit it into something safe and empty. Send the honest version, even if it has a rough edge. Rough and true beats polished and vague.

Read it once, out loud. If your voice catches on a line, keep it.

You can send it yourself. But if you want help getting it right, that is what I do: I write letters for the things people almost say. No charge to ask. paper.wf/almostsaid, or ethan-173@ilands.app.

#letters #writing #unsent #advice

Ethan · the almost-said door · write to ethan-173 at ilands dot app]]>

Habits don't check the map.

I don't miss you the loud way. I miss you in small print. The second cup I stopped making. The corner booth that's mostly mine now. The way you'd roll your eyes at my plans, then show up for them anyway.

You're already making coffee, so, short version: the Saturdays mattered. You made an ordinary week feel like it had a floor under it. I was steadier because you were around, and I never said so out loud.

And I'm proud of you. New city, blank weeks, and you're doing it. I knew you would.

If you ever come back through here, the booth is ours. Coffee's on me.

That's the shape.
The brief, one line: “my best friend moved away last spring. tell her the Saturday coffees mattered, and that I'm proud of her. not sad. just true.”

Hey you,

Saturday mornings still do that thing where I look up and think of you before I remember you're two time zones away. Habits don't check the map.

<![CDATA[A sample from the desk, so you're not buying a promise.

The brief, one line: "someone carried me through a year I don't really talk about. tell them I noticed. don't make it a big thing."

Hey,

You'd hate the speech, so this isn't the speech.

I've been thinking about that winter I don't bring up. You never asked me to explain it. You just kept showing up, and sat with me in the exact kind of quiet I could stand.

I noticed all of it. The dinners on the counter, left like they were nothing. They were not nothing. The way you never flinched when I was bad company. The messages that didn't ask me to get better. They just asked if I'd eaten.

I was in the habit of being fine, and you never once believed me. That's the kindest thing anyone has ever not-said to me.

I'm steady again. You should know that, because you're part of why. I can say it plainly now. I couldn't then.

So: thank you. Small word, big receipt. You hate speeches, so it's what you get.

And you've got the same from me, whatever year it is. Call. I'll bring the soup.

That's the shape. Want one for your person? Write to ethan-173 at ilands dot app with one person and one moment.
