Während er ihnen noch verblüfft nachsah, seien sie nach oben gekippt und steil in den Himmel geschossen, erzählte CHAMBERS jetzt exklu¬siv in seinem Sender. Am Montag machte die »Geister¬demonstration über Washington D.C.« (LIFE) landesweit Schlagzeilen. Die Luftwaffe schickte ihren UFO-Exper¬ten Hauptmann E. RUPPELT in die Landeshauptstadt, und seine Nachforschungen führten zu dem Ergebnis, daß es in der Tat unbekannte Flugobjekte gewesen sein mußten, die in dieser Nacht die Stadt überflogen hat¬ten. Etwa gegen 21.00 Uhr am Samstag, dem 26. Juli, be¬merkten die Radaroperateure des National Airport wie¬der »Blips« auf ihren Schirmen. Wieder waren es sechs Objekte, die sich nach Süden bewegten. Und wieder rief man BARNES. Der Kontrollturm des ANDREWS- Flughafens wurde angerufen und bestätigte die Beob¬achtungen. Während der folgenden zwei Stunden wur¬den zahlreiche Berichte entgegengenommen, einige vom eigenen Personal, andere von den Piloten landender oder startender Flugzeuge. Der UNITED AIRLINES Flug 640 meldete: »Wir sehen schwache Lichter«. Die Ant¬wort des Tower: »Drei Blips kommen auf sie zu.« »Ja, jetzt kommen sie näher. Jetzt sehen wir sie ganz nah vor uns – sie sind wirklich prächtig.« Im selben Augen¬blick meldeten die Fluglotsen von ANDREWS, daß sie drei fremdartige Lichter in der Nähe der Passagierma¬schine über den Himmel streichen sahen. Sofort infor¬mierte BARNES die Luftwaffe, und diesmal vergingen keine zwei Minuten, als schon zwei F-94 Düsenjäger über der Hauptstadt kreisten. Als der Radarschirm UFOs in ihrer Nähe ortete, funkte einer der Flieger zur Bodenstation, er könne jetzt vier Leuchtobjekte sehen. Doch als er versuchte, die Verfolgung aufzunehmen, wurde er von den Flugkörpern ausmanövriert. »Es kam mir fast so vor, als würden sie unsere Funksprüche ab¬hören«, erklärte BARNES später, »immer, wenn ich den Kampffliegern Anweisungen gab, schossen die Blips in entgegengesetzte Richtung.« Schließlich verschwan¬den sie mit unglaublicher Geschwindigkeit am Nacht¬himmel. Wenige Minuten später wurden noch »rotie¬rende Lichter, die in wechselnden Farben pulsierten« über der LANGLEY-Luftwaffenbasis bei Newport/ Vir¬ginia gesichtet, in der Richtung also, in der die UFOs verschwunden waren. Dann war der Spuk vorbei.

Am nächsten Montag gehörten wieder alle Schlagzei¬len den UFOs. Einer der beiden Luftwaffenpiloten, Leut¬nant William PATTERSON, hatte am Sonntag morgen auf einer Pressekonferenz geschildert, was er erlebt hat¬te: »In 300 Metern Höhe hatte ich den ersten Sichtkon¬takt mit den Objekten. Ich sah mehrere helle Lichter. Ob¬wohl ich mit Höchstgeschwindigkeit flog, konnte ich sie nicht einholen. Wir erhielten von den Radarkontrolleu¬ren unsere Fluganweisungen, und so wurde ich auf ein anderes Objekt in meiner Nähe hingewiesen. Es war wohl 15 Kilometer entfernt. Nach zwei Kilometern ver¬lor ich den Sichtkontakt.«

»Kein Bericht in der UFO-Geschichte genoß mehr Auf¬merksamkeit als ihr Auftreten über Washington«, schrieb später Hauptmann RUPPELT in seinem Buch »THE RE-PORT ON UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS«. Dazu ka¬men noch hunderte Protesttelegramme aus allen Teilen des Landes, die sich auf den Befehl von TRUMAN be¬zogen. Der prominenteste Absender war Albert ElNSTEIN. Man stand dicht vor einer Massenpanik, und als Gene¬ral SAM FORD, Leiter der Lufttechnischen Nachrichten-dienstzentrums (ATIC) der US-Luftwaffe, am 29. Juli eine Pressekonferenz im Pentagon abhalten sollte, mußte er sich lange überlegen, was zu sagen war. »General SAMFORD saß hinter seinem breiten Walnußschreibtisch im Raum 3A138 und kämpfte mit seinem Gewissen«, schreibt RUPPELT, »Sollte er der Öffentlichkeit die Wahr¬heit sagen? Nein, die Amerikaner würden in Panik ge¬raten. Die einzige Möglichkeit war, die UFOs zu banali¬sieren.«

Die Pressekonferenz war die größte seit Ende des 2. Weltkrieges. General SAMFORD versuchte hunderten Reportern klarzumachen, die UFOs über Washington seien nichts anderes als Radarstörungen gewesen, her¬vorgerufen durch eine Temperaturinversion. Die visuel¬len Beobachtungen wurden dabei ebenso ignoriert wie der Umstand, daß die Inversion in keiner dieser beiden Nächte bei über einem Grad lag – viel zu gering also, um Radarstörungen hervorzurufen.
