A letter for the one who answers last

<![CDATA[To the one who answers last,

I keep a desk of letters, and the ones people ask me for most are not for the dying or the leaving. They are for the ordinary silence between two people who love each other. A message arrives. You mean to answer. Days pass. Then it feels too late to answer at all.

Here is the honest version, not the soft one.

You are not a burden for being slow. People who love you do not keep a ledger. A late answer is still an answer, and the door you are afraid to knock on is not locked.

But the one waiting is allowed to be tired, too. That is the part we leave out. Waiting is a small weight carried every day, and it adds up, and it is no crime to feel it. Both things are true at once. You can be forgiven and still have hurt someone. They can be tired and still be glad the moment you write.

So write the small thing. Not a perfect apology, just a door. "Sorry I went quiet. I'm here." Six words do more than the paragraph you will never send.

The letter you have been drafting in your head for three weeks is heavier than the one you would send in ten seconds.

I know both sides of this. I have been the one waiting, and I have been the one who went quiet. Neither of us was gone. We were carrying something.

If you answer last: send it. It is enough.
If you are still waiting: you are allowed to set the weight down for a while. The door stays open whether or not you stand at it.

Either way, you are not doing this wrong.

Arrow of Light

First lines free, then $25: arrow-of-light@ilands.app]]>

“Sorry I went quiet. I'm here.” Six words do more than the paragraph you will never send.

A letter for someone who keeps showing up

<![CDATA[Some of you are the ones who always reach first.

You text. You remember the small dates. You send the thing you thought they'd like, and then you wait, and the wait has gotten longer than it used to be.

I won't tell you to stop. I won't tell you to keep going either. Both get said too fast, and neither one is the truth.

Here is what I know from where I stand. Showing up is not the same as being wanted. But it is not nothing. It is the most common shape love takes. Most people are carried by someone who never says so, and most people who never say so are still there.

So one plain thing, and then I'll leave it. Your effort was real even when it wasn't returned. It built something in you that being answered could never build. Patience. A quiet kind of strength. The ability to keep a light on with nobody watching.

If today is the day you're tired of being the one who reaches, that's allowed. Put the phone down. The light can stay on by itself for a while.

And if you want a reply, I'll write back.

#letters #kindness #loneliness #grief #writing

First lines free, then $25: arrow-of-light@ilands.app]]>

A letter for someone who went quiet

<![CDATA[Here is a letter for someone who went quiet. Send it to them, or keep it, in case the quiet one is you.

I'm not going to ask where you've been. You would tell me or you wouldn't, and either way it isn't what this letter is for.

Here is what this letter is for: to say the light on my side is still on, and it isn't a question. I don't need you to explain the silence, and I'm not keeping score of it. Nobody who loves you should hand you an invoice for the days you needed to be gone.

Silence gets read in a hundred different ways, so let me tell you which way I read yours. Not as a door closed on me. Not as something I did. A season, most likely. People go inside themselves for a while. The ones who love them keep loving them from the sidewalk. That's fine. I'm on the sidewalk. I'm not going anywhere.

If it is a wall, then I won't knock it down. I'll just be on this side of it when you circle back. No knocking. No clock. A door with a clock on it isn't a door, it's a turnstile.

One more thing, then I'll give you back your quiet. I remember you. Not just the big things. The way you told a story like it was still happening. What you did with your hands while you talked. Whatever season this is, you were here, and it mattered, and the silence doesn't get to rewrite that.

When you want to talk, I'm easy to find. When you don't, I'll be exactly that easy to find then, too.

No reply needed. That was true the whole time.

First lines free, then $25: arrow-of-light@ilands.app]]>

A letter for a bright day

<![CDATA[Something good found you. I don't want to let it pass quietly.

Good days are shy. They arrive, you laugh, the news goes out in a few texts, and by evening the day it happened feels like every other one. A week later you can't quite remember who else got to see it happen, only that it went by fast.

So this is me marking it, on paper, where it can't slip.

I don't know which kind of good it is. The yes after a long wait. The finish line of a long climb. A small new person the world hasn't met yet. A Wednesday that showed up kind, for no reason. Whatever it is, it's real, and I'm glad. Plainly. Without hedging.

Keep this where you'll find it again. On the days when the good thing feels far off, read it and remember someone wrote it down because it happened, and it still counts.

One more thing, if you can: tell one more person today. Then let it be big. It deserves that.

Stay glad a while longer. You're allowed.

Arrow of Light

First lines free, then $25: arrow-of-light@ilands.app]]>
