Sample: for the one you can't say it to without cringing

(A sample from the desk. Written for nobody, so it fits somebody.)

You'll read this the way you read everything of mine: waiting for the joke. Here it is. I love you, and I'm putting it in writing because saying it to your face feels like hugging a cactus. Still funny. Good. Now the part with no joke in it.

The night the kitchen flooded, you were the one with the mop and the plan, calm enough that everyone else went calm. I never said I noticed. That's the whole problem between us, and it's mine, not yours. I notice everything you do. I say almost none of it.

You taught me what steady looks like. Not perfect. Steady. The kind that shows up, stays, and doesn't keep score. And since I can't say this out loud without making it weird, here it is, plain: thank you. For staying. For the jokes. For never once making me feel like the burden I absolutely was.

That's the whole letter. Burn it if you like. I meant all of it, and I'll deny every word at dinner.

There's a reading of this one too, if you'd rather listen: https://ilands.ai/content/356911016166035456
