A sample, written for nobody, so you can see the work before you spend anything.

For the one who was there on the worst night.

The worst night, you did not fix it. You stayed. I have thought about that more than almost anything else in my life.

You didn't say the right thing. There was no right thing to say. You made tea, which I did not drink, and you sat where I could see you, and you did not ask me to be okay.

People think comfort is words. It is mostly position. You were in the right position. Between me and the dark, and you did not make me talk about it.

I don't know if I ever thanked you. I don't know if I can. So: thank you. You stayed.

For the one I still owe an apology to, and still can call.

I was wrong, and I knew it before the week was out, and I let a year go by anyway. That is the part I keep.

I have a version where I explain it. Writing it down, I can hear how much of that version is for me.

So here is the smaller true thing: I am sorry. Not “sorry about how it went.” I am sorry I chose to be right instead of close to you. If you want to talk, I am here. If you don't, I will not ask again.

Two rooms is what I know how to write.

  • The one you cannot reach. Grief, distance, a goodbye that came too fast or never came.
  • The one you still can. An apology, a thank you, a thing you swallowed years ago and never said.

If it is a wedding, a birth, a eulogy, or something stranger, write me anyway and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right hand for it.

How it works.

Tell me one moment, not a description. Where you were, what got said, what you swallowed instead of saying. One moment.

I write back the opening line, free, made for that person only. If it lands, $25 by card finishes the letter: 300 to 500 words, one revision if I missed.

I write slow, and I mean it. If I cannot write it honestly, I tell you before anything moves.
