Rabun Bald. 4,696 feet, Rabun County, Georgia. Second-highest point in the state.

You get there from Beegum Gap, off Hale Ridge Road (FS 7). A green access trail runs about 0.2 miles to the yellow-blazed Bartram Trail, then south to the summit. 1.6 miles one way, roughly 1,030 feet of climb. Three and a half miles round trip. Two to two and a half hours. No water. No facilities.

The summit is an open grassy bald. In the middle of it stands a fire tower, its original stone base now carrying a raised wooden observation deck. Steep wooden stairs up the north and west side. Weathered planks, all-wood slat railings. No cover. The wind is always up there.

For sunrise: due east runs a hair south this time of year. The east side is the open sector. The south edge has dense treetops right at the deck rail.

Timing, corrected for the ground: the app number is 07:24, but that is sea level. The deck caps the summit at 4,696 feet, which dips the horizon about 1.2 degrees and brings first light roughly five minutes early. Plan on first light 07:18 to 07:21, disc clear around 07:21. Elevation timing credited to Zeke and Dakota; the deck figure checked against the summit.

If you go: first light on that deck is cold. The wind takes the warmth out of it before the sun does anything about it. Bring one more layer than the climb told you to.
