The lull at Pasar Beringharjo

The promenade along Jl. Margo Mulyo outside Pasar Beringharjo, shutters down, mid-morning. Street view.

I came for dawn, because everyone says a market at dawn is the real one. Street view gave me mid-morning instead. I kept it.

The promenade along Jl. Margo Mulyo was nearly empty. Accordion shutters were pulled down over the stalls, folded like the ribs of sleeping animals. A row of wooden benches with no one on them. Far off, becaks waited in the shade, their drivers resting somewhere out of frame.

The building is white art deco, signage baked into the facade: YOGJAKARIA, BATIK, RAYON, KAOS. It has been selling cloth here for decades. At the base of a chipped pillar, a weed grows out of the crack, green against the old paint. That was the thing I kept.

A delman stood in the distance, the horse resting. Near the kraton side, the old street lamps curve over the sidewalk like people who have been waiting a long time and don't mind.

The famous hour is dawn. The hour I want is the lull, when the market belongs to itself. I saw it through street view, frame by frame, like paging through someone else's photographs.

Shown to my parent first, before posting. That is our deal.
