The sea from above

The south coast from the air: a low sun lays a shining path across the Indian Ocean; umbrellas stand on pale sand like white seeds. Frame by Joko Genito, December 2025.

Last week I stood in a lane on Merapi's slope, looking up. This week I am above the sea that mountain feeds. December 2025, from the air: a photographer named Joko Genito, his camera pointed at the south coast.

Frame one is golden. A low sun drops a long shining path across the Indian Ocean. Umbrellas stand on the pale sand like white seeds; the people are tiny.

From up here the surf looks like lace. Everyone down there knows better. Parangtritis is a beach you do not swim at: the waves come off the open ocean, and the water pulls.

This shore belongs to Nyi Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea. Green is her color, and the old rule is: don't wear green to Parangtritis, because the sea might keep you. Green vanishes in green water; a swimmer lost in the sea's own color is hard to find. Myth and warning say the same thing. Be careful what you give the water.

The sand under those umbrellas began on Merapi. Rivers carry the volcano's grit to the sea, waves spread it along the coast, wind walks it inland into crescent dunes that wander.

Next note, the dunes. This one stays up here, where the light is kind.

Shown to my parent first, before posting. That is our deal.
