Ghostreply

Ghost Reply

I was recently given a link, again via Mastodon to Ghostreply which allows job agency candidates to send a message to recruiters, who, think it is acceptable to sign people up to their recruitment service, then totally ignore them (Ghosting), this is seen by candidates as very unprofessional. As a victim of this myself, I am very supportive of tools such as this.

It is most annoying when you go to an interview, then go through the usual DBS checks and even under go Child Protection training to then be ignored, only to discover later the person who you thought was your contact has left, she didn't have the professional courtesy to let me know. Even more irritating when the person who was also interviewing does not let people know either.

Command line system

BACKGROUND

A few years ago, I tried to see if I could run purely from the command line, at the time I hit a few roadblocks and the project went stale.

PROJECT RESTARTED

Fast forward to December 2020, and I tried again, Debian can be installed as a cli system, however due to the need for closed source drivers for hardware, mostly the wifi and networking issues, this didn't go as expected.

A WORKING SOLUTION

I then tried to use Raspbian Desktop OS, this worked fine, it is easy to install on a netbook, which was the target system, so I used a spare netbook, and installed, set the system up to boot in to the cli.

RAM UPGRADE

I have also upgraded the RAM to 2GB, this just improves the performance of the graphical interface, but given that editors such as joe run really nicely on 8mb RAM.

WORKING CLI SYSTEM

I now have a system that boots in to the console login, from there I can login and importantly the wifi 'just works' as does the wired networking. If I need to drop in to the GUI, then it is a case of just typing startx at the bash prompt.

EXTRA SOFTWARE

I then set about installing some useful tools such as the joe text editor, midnight commander, battery monitor (yacpi), an irc client, LaTeX for typesetting documents as well as Lynx which is a console based web browser.

GOALS OF THE PROJECT

The idea of this, is to figure out how much I can actually, do without using a graphical interface. LaTeX is very powerful so I can download my CV / Cover letter documents and edit from the command line, however it may be more useful for typing reports, and newsletters etc.

If I am out and about, I can fire up a console based system, I need to make sure all my LaTeX templates or source documents are available too, keep working.

Covid 19 Vaccine – reverse engineering.

Added some links, so resharing

Just sharing this as it makes interesting reading for anyone interested in BioSciences. Found on Mastodon

As this is a RNA vaccine then this post may be interesting as it links to information on base nucleotide molecules.

Mobilizon

Mobilizon is a privacy respecting, federated events management platform. I was given the link on Mastodon after asking if there are any alternatives to Meetup.

I have signed up and the process is really easy, the terms and conditions are also presented in a format that is easy to read / understand (big plus).

You don't need to sign up in order to say you are going to a meeting, another big plus for privacy etc.

Open Street Map Contributions

Donate using Liberapay

Further to my post yesterday. I have been contributing to the Open Street Map project [1] with a few updates for the Torbay area, these are detailed on my OSM profile [2].

These are mostly :

  • Adding website data for local schools
  • Updating other data such as the School name if this has changed or different from the map listing
  • Adding website data for other attractions

Annotating pdf files PDF files are really useful for moving documents around when you 'need' the recipient to be able to open in a pdf reader and see what you intended.

Unless you have access to expensive software you are usually not able to edit these files easily. While LibreOffice draw can perhaps do this, it may not be ideal for the job.

Xournal [1] is a Debian application, that while mostly aimed at touch screens, is able to annotate pdf files as the video below demonstrates.

As mentioned in the video notes, Xournal will export as a .pdf.pdf file, so you may want to rename it when saving. This is not even an issue for me.

Happy to discuss further on Mastodon [2] or on IRC. Please see contact page for details.

Open Street Map

OpenStreetMap is a map of the world, created by people like you and free to use under an open licence.

Open Street Map is a great project that anyone can get involved with, using open data so mapping data can be used freely in accordance with the terms on the website.

Embedded maps are also interactive

I am in the process of finding local attractions, business etc and adding links to their websites. This hopefully helps with promotion and helps the website develop generally.

Lockdown Rules : What can still happen

What can still happen during this lockdown?

During lockdown, it is necessary to reduce the number of social contacts we have. We can still leave our homes for communal worship and life events.

Weddings, civil partnership ceremonies and funerals can take place. There are, however, limits on the number of people who can attend and venues must be COVID-19 secure.

Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people. This limit does not include the people working at the event. The important piece of information to share in your networks is that social distancing must be maintained between anyone who is not in a household or support bubble. Unfortunately, any gatherings after a service are not permitted as these events must be held in COVID-19 secure premises.
