Staying healthy in lockdown
We know that lockdown is extremely challenging, and can be very difficult for people’s mental health. Mental wellbeing is so important and we are asking our champions to support your networks to protect their health and wellbeing as much as possible.
Please can you share the following resources with your networks so that they can access mental health and wellbeing support if and when they need it.
The website healthwatchtorbay.org.uk has information about local mental health services for issues such as anxiety and depression, and details of helplines, phone apps and self-care tools.
Local GPs are an extremely useful source of support and can advise on treatments and how to access mental health services.
The Mental Health Matters Devon Helpline provides 24/7 mental health help on 0800 4700317.
MIND provides emotional and listening support to anyone experiencing mental distress, their carers, relatives and friends 0300 123 3393 (Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm) or visit mind.org.uk
It is also important to stay physically active during lockdown. You are allowed to leave your house to exercise once a day. Please emphasise the importance of regular physical activity to your networks, and remind them that they can exercise with their household or support bubble or, if alone, one other person from another household.

Promoting Torbay

I have set up an account on Mastodon (https://mastodon.org.uk) in order to help promote Torbay in South Devon, UK and what is has to offer.
This is a small project, I am not getting paid to do this, but hopefully, in undertaking this I am able to demonstrate initiative and other useful skills.
I will be adding photos and information / links to local attractions, etc.
Hopefully see if the local Tourist board will look in to getting on the Fediverse more formally, to help promote.
As the UK is in another Covid19 lockdown, to avoid yet another holiday season being written off, The cost to the local economy, if this happens, will be catastrophic. Why not take the time to explore as many ways to promote the local area and business as possible.
One way to get the fediverse to grow is to perhaps have accounts such as this, as it gives people a reason to join as there is something interesting to follow.

Fixing application forms
Application forms created in MS word sometimes seem to show strange behaviour when opened in LibreOffice.
An example is below

So in this case there is a Grey background to the text, this seems to get in the way of typing and filling out the form properly.
This can be fixed with
View —> Field Shadings
Another oddity with this form is protected fields. In the very fields / boxes that you are meant to type text into.
This can be fixed with
Tools —> Options —> LibreOffice Writer —> Compatibility then unchecking the write protect box.
This screen shot is from LibreOffice 6, the LibreOffice 7 option is slightly different but should also fix the problem.

This is a really good example of why we need to adopt open standards such as ODF. We also need to consider that not everyone runs MS Office. Free software makes computing accessible to ALL.

Flockingbird

Flockingbird is a new project to build a privacy respecting, professional networking platform, similar to LinkedIn but without ads, tracking etc.
As it is early days, you can follow the project on Mastodon
Or find more information at:-
I have submitted some ideas for this project. It is nice to be able to do this and make contributions, however small.

Mastodon Privacy and safety

So today I am presenting 3 more videos on Mastodon.
Firstly a video on how to hide sentitive content, which is more of a safety feature.
It is probably a good idea to hide all media, as different people have different views on what is sensitive.
The second video allows you to do two things
- Not be indexed by search engines
- Hides who you follow, and who follows you.
While the third video looks at how to ensure your timeline, feed etc remain private and away from public view. This also means people would have to sign up to the Fediverse to see and commuicate with you.
This is also an important safety feature as it reduces the risk of stalking, you also need to keep activity private from perhaps employers, potential employers or other parties.
