I decided yesterday that I needed to start over with my LinkedIn account by make a totally fresh profile / account.
So I spent today, doing just that. The result is a nice fresh profile and account here
Still got a few things to iron. But I think it is better than the old one. This will be deleted in due course.
Basic IT course update 7
Earlier this year (March to May 6th), I was undertaking a Level 1 Basic IT course. It is now 4 months since completing the course, I am STILL waiting for my certificate. Have been advised 16 weeks which to me is far too long.
So this course was undertaken via an old fashioned brick college offering distance learning.
This is another good reason to promote courses through other online providers. You get generally a certificate quickly (or can download an electronic version) on completion.
This is essential, if you need one for work, for example. At least with FutureLearn, it is a few days to deliver a nice paper certificate I suspect EdX, Free Code Camp send them out quickly too. OpenLearn issue certificates of completion within a few hours.
Parts of the UK system, are so old and antiquated, it is laughable, this is 2020. Just look at the mess the exam system was in this year. This HAS to change.
The narrative has to change, so eventually the old exam boards, with any luck with fade in to oblivion.
To be fair, there is a global pandemic. That however does not stop other providers, providing evidence of study quickly. I ended up making my own certificate in an attempt to evidence what is on my CV.

Adding games to Debian Xfce menu
Yesterday, I wrote briefly that I am now using snaps, this works really well, but does not add items to the Debian XFCE menu automatically.
To solve this I have installed menulibre, which helps users edit the menu.
apt install menulibre
So adding items to this is fairly straight forward.
menu —> accessories —> Menu Editor

Once loaded you will be presented with:-

The + in the corner allows users to add a new entry.
Click on the appropriate place in the menu to add your program to where you want it. You can also move items around with the up / down arrows at the bottom, don't forget to save (see later) what you have changed.

You can then enter the details of the program. To save there is an icon to the right of the + Depicting an arrow pointing towards a disk drive. Click this to save.
You can then test to make sure your entry works.
Debian 10 – Gaming
So following on from yesterdays post. I decided to see if I could get some more games working.
The OpenRA allows you to play the WestWood studios Command and Conquer games. However this failed to load on my previous install. So I decided to take a different approach.
Snaps are a new way to package games, so I decided to see if this approach would work with C&C on Debian, so after some reading and experimentation. I can now play: C&C Tiberian Sun and C&C Red Alert.
The above games have been made with the original code released by Westwood, where as OpenRA is an open source version.
As with anything, you need to read, experiment and research in order to get things working.

Tiberian Sun, once loaded it runs full screen.

In game, as you can see this does run windowed, so makes screenshots possible.
Fresh Debian install
I spent some time, last night, re-installing Debian 10.x. I am now running a nice clean 10.5 desktop system.

As expected, this is a very simple process. After install I spent time restoring data, installing a few programs, I am likely to use more often.
Also nice to have lots of disk space left:-
df -h /home
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 143G 32G 105G 23% /

ARDUINO SCIENCE JOURNAL
This looks great, really useful to be able to easily record results from science experiments.
A pocket-sized science lab that encourages students to explore how the world works, record data, document observations, and experiment like a real scientist.

Debian Academy Update 21/9/2020
So a quick update. I am currently working on a Moodle course to help teach how to edit and create presentations in LaTeX / Beamer. We can use this as part of the Debian Academy project. Still work in progress. But hopefully this course will help others.
Please see the Wiki page for details.
