Organic Chemistry Modelling

I have been building some organic Chemistry models with Molymods, starting with the first 10 alkanes.

Methane Ethane Propane Butane Pentane hexane heptane octane nonane decane

The order of these are

  1. Methane
  2. Ethane
  3. Propane
  4. Butane
  5. Pentane
  6. Hexane
  7. Heptane
  8. Octane
  9. Nonane
  10. Decane

So going from top to bottom, you get an indication of the number of Carbon atoms in the chain. So 1 for Methane and 10 for Decane.

The general rule is CnH2n+2 BBC Bitesize.

You can find an infographic on organic compound naming on Compound Chemistry

Team Status

Having dropped out of the league due to lack of players leading to concerns about player safety. We are in the process of rebuilding the team. We have coaches, we have a place to train so we just need to build numbers so, we can re-enter the league either for the 2024 season, or more likely the 2025 season, with a squad, fully trained, fully ready for that season.

In the mean time we need to play 3 associate games to get back in the league.

We can also play friendlies, flag tournaments, scrimmage games along the way. At the same time we want to have fun playing the game we love OR by getting involved in other ways.

Please join us on this journey.

Diverse organic-mineral associations in Jezero crater, Mars

The rover that just keeps giving, so looks like “NASA's Perseverance Mars rover discovers more evidence of building blocks of life on Mars.”.

This is from the original Fediverse post by Natalie Davis

NASA's Perseverance Mars rover discovers more evidence of building blocks of life on Mars. Although the organic molecules were not necessarily the products of biological processes, it does raise the chances Mars once had life and could indicate we're looking in the right place.

So exciting stuff, the full article in Nature can be found here

So we are finding more evidence Mars may once have had life. If you want to learn more about some of the basic building blocks of life and how we go about finding these, please check a previous post about the Mumbai University Astrobiology course videos

In the mean time feel free to ask on Fedi or on Science forums.

American football – Torbay Trojans Video 6

Being able to run routes is important as it also involves, speed, timing and being in sync with the QB so when the ball is passed the WR or other playing receiving the ball is in the right place at the right time to catch and then run.

Climate change – more extreme weather on the way.

The climate is changing and fast, it seems much faster than we had predicted. This weekend will see RECORD European heat.

Recent BBC articles on various serious issues. Heat over 40c has proven deadly to humans, it can destroy crops, water systems etc.

We still want to mine deep see minerals,. warnings about this ignored, and due to people not making agreements deadlines pass to stop this happening. We don't need to mine for new tech, we don't need new phones ever year, we need to consume less, recycle more and change the way we live our lives to more sustainable models. The fact the ocean floor is teaming with unstudied life, means if we start mining, we will most likely destroy this fragile ecosystem and wipe out species we don't even know about.

While at the same time there are still posts denying all these problems spreading on some social media platforms.

If you want to have proper discussions on all this I suggest you join a Fediverse instance such as qoto mastodon or Science Forums.

I have since added another link to an article about land temperatures hitting 60 degrees C.

There were two big bangs

This new theory is fast gaining ground, the idea being that the current theory only produced 5% of the matter we can see, where as the universe is made up of 95% dark energy and dark matter. So this had to come from somewhere. The idea now is there was a secondary big bang producing the remaining 95% of this matter.

Using the Jugs machine to practice catching. This makes it much easier to get a consistent pass of the ball, at a given speed.

Exoplanets Transit simulator

This was posted to Mastodon by Dr. Alexandre Santerne. Just had a go and it looks really nice and smooth, and has few options to change the simulation parameters.

Do you know how #astronomers are hunting for #exoplanets ? Most of them are discovered with the transit and/or radial velocity techniques.

We developed at #LAM (#laboratoire d'#astrophysique de #Marseille) a web tool that simulate an #exoplanet and show you their photometric and radial velocity signals. Feel free to play with the parameters and see how they change the signals.

STEM Group 12/8/2023

The next stem group will be on 12th July 2023, 11am to 15:00. We will carry on from the previous code club, but also look at our own projects a bit more.

Due to a science festival on the ground floor support for activities in the IT room will be limited. I will be undertaking some science activities on the ground floor, which will include

  • Sand box craters
