Clean Code

Another useful resource from Free Code Camp. I will leave the description in place.

While Code Club is aimed at beginners, as you progress, it is a good idea to use good practice, so this book will hopefully help with that.

You may have heard of "Clean Code" before. It's a collection of coding best practices. You can read this handbook, then bookmark it so you can refer to it when you need to understand key Clean Code concepts. You'll learn about Modularization, The Single Responsibility Principle, Naming Conventions, and more.

To those of you who work with Children & Young people but remain on Twitter.

Please read this

  1. By deleting your Twitter account you send a clear message to the Twitter CEO and board you do not tolerate this (and everything else that is going on) and you are removing your account as a strong protest..

  2. By remaining ON Twitter in June 2023 and claiming a commitment to safeguarding, you are either complicit or plain stupid, you clearly support it and you should NOT be on twitter while claiming you are committed to safeguarding children.

The 2nd statement may not be strictly true, however it could be misconstrued as such.

So much for Keeping children safe in education suggesting social media checks as part of pre-employment checks. Why would you employ someone or trust a school who remains on this cesspit with the welfare of anyone, especially children and young people.

Back in November 2022, some of us (including myself ) could see this coming, we had warnings on Mastodon about what was happening, people moving in a mass exodus, the fact there were massive lay off's, esp of moderators or technicians was a red flag, the fact Nazi's, racists, homophobes, transphobes and others are allowed back on should be a red flag. You can't tell me you are not aware of what has / is going on.

Roll on the online safety bill and lets hope the regulator starts with a very hard lined, robust, no nonsense attitude and starts to haul these Big tech CEOs in to court and hits them with the full weight of the law.

Fediverse may not be perfect, but at least we acknowledge problems and have tools & moderation in place to deal with bad actors and accounts. Community do a better job than huge multi million dollar companies because we CARE and put people before profits.

AI and education

We have had a discussion and a quick look at Chat GPT [1] the previous code club, and on the same day. Free Code Camp [2] sent me a link to a video looking at this and coding. [3]. I think it is worth looking at this further during a future STEM group event. The BBC has an article where the education sector has raised concerns too. [4]. British Telecom have also announced big job cuts, replacing people with AI [5] .

A review of the weekend

So a busy weekend. While most people in Torbay were probably either watching the English Riviera Air show, I was busy, Saturday helping to remark the pitch ready for Sunday.

As we spent a good few hours on Saturday 27th fully marking out the pitch, thanks to the draw weather, it was mostly a case of going over the lines / hashes with fresh paint, as a result we were complete in about 2 hours. I used some of the time to tidy the top of a locker, put some of the paperwork in to a box, I had brought down a few weeks ago, so the locker was much tidier. I also sorted the yard markers in to order ready for Sunday.

So on to Sunday morning, arriving in Foxhole about 9:15, it was too early for Breakfast, so I asked to be let in to the changing rooms, first job of the day was to set up the pitch. So started by getting out post protectors and yard markers and set those out. By this time Simon and Debi had arrived, so we had breakfast. After breakfast, Simon opened up the container and I carried on setting out the yard markers, pylons and set up the other post protectors.

I was then helping set up rest of the side line area etc, had some lunch and finished off a few other jobs. Once we got to 13:30 it was nearly time for kick off so time for the usual side line chain crew briefing. I decided this week that I would swap with another member of the crew and carry 1 ½ of the chain, and let another member of the crew hold the yard marker, 14;00 was kick off, The game lasted until about 16:30.

After the game, it was time to clear away the side line. With some help from one of the other chain crew, I put yard markers, numbers for the score board, pylons, and post protectors away, after which it was finally shower time.

By this time most people had gone home, so it was just a case of a final tidy up. After this, those of us who were left put the score board away, locked the container and put away the rest of the equipment that was left out. Finally getting away at about 18:30.

This is a typical home game, however we did have the added bonus of the Air show going on in the background, which was good, but I was mostly too busy on chain crew to watch.

Next week we are back to training, a chance to tidy up the container and set out the usual resources for the session.

Code Club – Trinket and python Modules

Trinket allows you to use a number of different modules to add functionality to your programs.

Code Club have added a py5 module for their own projects. So this post will examine how to add one of the available libraries to your program.

Firstly a list of the modules that Trinket.io provides can be found here. along with some documentation for each.

So to add a module we need to use the import command.

Start with a blank new Python 3 project and enter the following

#!/usr/bin/env python3 #use python 3

Then the instruction to import the required module.

import numpy

Now test if you don't get errors proceed to add

from numpy import *

And test again.

Should give no errors, in which case you can now start to use module numpy

Other info

You can use modules such as Numpy and matplotlib in software such as Jupyter Notebook
