Home Chemistry 14

New chemistry order arrived on Wednesday, this equipment will allow for further useful chemistry both at home and at the STEM group meeting.

Volflask

Volumetric flask is used to make accurate measurements when making up specific volumes of liquids or solutions.

Burette

A burette can be used for Titration. An solution of known concentration is put in to the burette, an solution of unknown concentration is can be put in the flask. The two can be mixed by adding a very small amount at a time, for example 0.5ml or 1ml.

Code Club 15/4/2023

The next Paignton Library code club is on Saturday 15th April 2023 10 am to 12:00. We can carry on with what we are doing, new members welcome as there are resources for beginners to more experienced user.

I have included a link to the GNU/Linux command line BASH shell tutorials,

If you would like to start undertaking more with Python, we have 4 copies of the Python for beginners book on the shelf, and there is a copy in the Library which can be borrowed. The Pis and laptops / netbooks do have Python installed. But it may just be easier to get a Repl.it account

Going further, the two laptops I gave out on the 7th have the GoDot game engine installed, this is for creating more advanced games, the main language for this is GD Script.

For those of you working on Responsive web design then this seems to be going really well.

There are also some contests you can get involved with, some of these are listed below.

3D map of the Red Planet

Zoom in on Mars like never before with this epic 3D map of the Red Planet

This was posted to Mastodon so sharing here today.

Created by the Bruce Murray Laboratory for Planetary Visualization at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, the interactive Global CTX Mosaic of Mars map (opens in new tab) is a mosaic created from images taken by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter — more specifically, its black-and-white Context Camera.

April STEM group write up

It was quiet again today, so I had a chance to do some of my own science projects. As there is more space I repeated some of last months Red cabbage indicator experiment and made a video of this.

I also undertook another experiment adding crushed eggshell to vinegar, then tested with indicator after a few hours.

Vinegar and egg 1

Vinegar and egg 2

I also made a video on an early attempt at this, by the end there is a slight colour difference, but as you can see from the two photos above, there is a clear difference after a few hours.

I have also found another make a model DNA activity so had a go at this.

DNA Model

The next STEM group meeting is on Saturday 13th May 2023. There will be more science and computing activities, or we can look at the projects people bring along with them.

In the meantime feel free to discuss on Science Forums where there is a dedicated Amateur science section.

NASA Citizen Science

This is something attendees at the STEM group could get involved with and use the group as a meet point to discuss projects and ideas being worked on.

Lets put Torbay on the map by building an active science community

Citizen Science Projects

NASA’s citizen science projects are collaborations between scientists and interested members of the public. Through these collaborations, volunteers (known as citizen scientists) have helped make thousands of important scientific discoveries. More than 410 NASA citizen scientists have been named as co-authors on refereed scientific publications. Want to work on some real NASA science? Click on one of the 34 projects below to get started. NASA citizen science projects are open to everyone around the world, not limited to U.S. citizens or residents. Projects with the
icon can be done by anyone, anywhere, with just a cellphone or laptop.

If you're note quite ready for this yet, then perhaps form a community so we can help each other build the skills and support each other.
