FSF Workshops
The first of the post LibrePlanet workshops takes place on Monday 10th April. Details below.
Newk Script: Code katas to learn programming
- Time: Monday, April 10, 12:00–13:30 EDT (16:00–17:30 UTC)
- Format: Online workshop
- Event link
- Registration link
- Presenter: Reynaldo Cordero
- Description:
Are you interested in a serendipitous Haskell programming learning method on your computer with over 1,700 katas ready to train? Newk is a Bash script using a 100% free software environment that takes advantage of serendipity the same way you learn to speak in childhood. No formal (or informal) classes: you are simply exposed to spoken information of any kind and at any level in real contexts, where everything is new, surprising, and true. Did you learn to speak? You will learn to program!

Home Chemistry 13
At the March STEM group meeting last month we undertook an activity using red cabbage indicator.
I have been working on a follow up activity to examine what happens when eggshells are added to vinegar and how this changes the pH of the solution.
Equipment
- Test tube rack
- 2 x Test tubes
- 2x pipettes
- Goggles
- Lab coat (optional)
- Gloves (optional but ideal if you have some)
- COMMON SENSE
Chemicals
- White Vinegar
- Red Cabbage indicator
- Egg shells (crushed to small pieces)
Method
We will use one test tube as a 'control' to compare the results.
- To the first test tube add 6 ml of Vinegar and 6 ml of Indicator.
- Repeat for the second test tube.
- Shake gently to mix if needed
- To one of the test tubes only add some crushed egg shells, make sure they reach the liquid in the test tube
- Shake gently if needed to help mix
If you now wait a while you will notice a colour change in the second tube, compared to the first tube.
What is happening
The calcium carbonate (alkali) in the eggshell reacts with the vinegar (acid) and neutralises the acid. You should be able to see bubbles.
Results

The control is on the left hand side, results are on the right. You can see a clear difference in colour.
Further reading
We can have a go at this at the Saturday STEM group meeting to confirm the results and may be try this out with different acids.
Maybe discuss further and share results on the Science Forums – Experiments section

Tesla and privacy
Interesting post to the fediverse highlighting a report on Reuters Tesla Employees sharing sensitive images from cars, sharing on social media and probably worse creating memes of the content.
Another post here links to the same article.
While technology is great, you can't seem to avoid the fact some humans will, it seems take any opportunity to abuse their position.

Debian Weekly Builds
As the release of Debian 12 (Bookworm) draws closer, the main freeze has taken place so weekly builds are now available.
This helps the developers test the OS and find any outstanding issues so they can be fixed before the final release.
I have included a few useful links below, which may or may not be useful if you want to help test Bookworm.
Debian Presentation updated
I have updated my Debian Presentation again for Bookworm (Debian 12). This has been pushed to the salsa repository.
I compiled this with
pdflatrex DebianBookwormPresentationMay2021.tex
Hopefully this is useful. Information mostly based on the release notes but also on other sources. In general I am on IRC as zleap so can be found on both OFTC and Libera.chat. I am also on fedi as zleap ( @[email protected] )

Paignton Library STEM Group – April 2023
The next meeting of the Paignton Library STEM Group is
Date: Saturday 8th April 2023,
Time: 11am to 15:00
Hopefully more coding, but also more science stuff, we can carry on looking at some science practical work, perhaps discuss how we can support any GCSE science too.
There are no specific activities planned, however we do have a few ongoing projects so we may have a go at building some of the STEM kits that we have available.

Big Blue Button
I have made a 5 minute video to showcase some of the features of the Big Blue Button video conferencing and teaching platform. I am not very confident with this, but I do try and get some main points across.
There are lots of really nice features, including video sharing, the latest release also has a much improved whiteboard feature.
