Python video tutorials

Just found a series of videos on Peertube which cover the Python 3 Programming language.

Worth a look, as different tutorials can present the same material in a different way, sometimes this is really helpful.

Teaching Computing Curriculum

The new framework for teaching computing and computer science can be found on the Teach Computing website.

As part of this, there are sections covering teaching animation. One example is for year 3 – Stop frame animation

At code club we have a piece of software called Tupi, which can be used for animation. I am creating a set of videos for peertube to cover the basic usage of this. As I am using Debian 11 to use the software and produce these resources they can be found in the Debian section of my diode.zone account on the federated Peertube network.

Please do not ask me about uploading to Youtube.

The next Code Club is on Saturday 15th October, so we may take a look at this IF there is sufficient interest.

More care industry abuse.

10 years after Winterborne view [1] we now have another atrocity, of patients in a mental health unit have been a abused [2]. With a CQC report on another facility in 2020 [3]

The UK conservative government have been in power since 2010, so there is no blaming others.

However the ring leader of the Winterborne view scandal got a whole TWO years in prison [4], not only insulting but hardly going to deter others.

  1. Winterborne view, 2012 4 Winterbourne View: Care workers jailed for abuse
  2. 'Toxic culture' of abuse at mental health hospital revealed by BBC secret filming, 2022
  3. CQC report: Care of people with learning disabilities 'inhumane'

[1] has links to further examples

  • Mum's 'guilt' over Winterbourne View, 26 October 2012
  • Abuse home care workers jailed, 26 October 2012
  • Fresh inquiry into abuse claims, 24 October 2012
  • Earlier abuse at hospital found, 22 October 2012
  • Call for change after care abuse, 7 August 2012
  • Care worker admits patient abuse, 6 August 2012
  • Two council care managers sacked, 24 July 2012
  • Rise in care home whistleblowers, 23 June 2012
  • Abuse home contracts scrutinised, 8 November 2011
  • Watchdog condemns abuse response, 18 July 2011
  • Shocking' care abuse condemned, 1 June 2011
  • Arrests after hospital abuse film, 1 June 2011

All this under a CONSERVATIVE government and they can't blame anyone else.

Meta and user safety

I think the current inquiry in to what happened to Molly Russell tells us a lot about Meta.

Rather different view to that of a psychiatrist (read Qualified professional)

Artemis 1 – Mission part 7

The plan is to try another launch during 27/9/2022. Check the NASA site for details. NASA is keeping an eye on the weather and an approaching tropical storm. Fingers Crossed the launch can go ahead.

Code Club 1/10/2022

Carrying on from last session,

We have access to Blender, a 3d graphics package, which can also handle animation etc. There are some good resources for this, so lets see what we can create.

I highly recommand that attendees bring a USB memory stick for saving work / projects. We can't save work to the Library computers, saving work to a cloud service is do-able, but this is sometimes tripped up as due to logging in from a different IP address than normal.

Don't worry we can still do Scratch, HTML / CSS and any of the usual activities.
