This is another interesting link that may be useful for anyone needing to undertake research using the internet. Granted this does use Google and more specifically Google Scholar but you may be able to get similar results using more privacy friendly search services such as duckduckgo.

Today is Safer Internet Day also known as SID. This year marks 20 years since the campaign started.

There are lots of resources on the website, and schools should be running sessions so as your teachers for details.

There are lots of things we can do which still make using the internet enjoyable and educational, but a safer experience. Not sharing personal information, being mindful as to who we are communicating with, to perhaps changing our social media to platforms that are more privacy friendly, seeking accurate information, see Sense about science for details and have a look at their 'ask for evidence' information. This is also a good way to avoid misinformation by fact checking what we read or see online by developing the skills to do so.

This article may also be useful too When critical thinking isn’t enough: to beat information overload, we need to learn ‘critical ignoring’

Simple changes could also include switching from google to duckduckgo for search, installing privacy essentials will also block sites such as facebook from tracking you. I don't notice this as much as I have simply blocked facebook and meta.

I also block cookies as much as possible, these are not needed esp any integration with analytics.google.com serve no real purpose other than to spy on you.

So we had another quiet session today, with 4 young people, plus a parent, nevertheless it was productive. Time was initially split between looking for an iphone cable (could not find one), and also troubleshooting a Raspberry Pi, which seemed more successful.

There was also a discussion on e-safety, in terms of posting online and how this can have consequences later on, employers can do searches on applicants for example and also what to post, also a brief discussion on asking for evidence and finding proper, credible information on the internet, I did give peer review a brief mentiobn

It seems really beneficial to have conversations.

This has prompted me to dig out a few resources I have here at home. These are set to one side for the next session. I have also asked the library if they can send off for some copies of the Vodafone digital parenting resource.

We also have access to a tablet with the Lego WeDo software installed so if anyone is interested they can have a go at code club without having to bring along own devices. However attendees can, it really helps as you can store projects on your own device.

Latest resource in the Data Detox kit from Tactical Tech is reverse image searching. This helps you identify the source of an image, which in turn helps you differentiate between accurate and misinformation.

These resources are well worth checking out. I am still planning on trying to do a talk on privacy at a future STEM group event.

So I recently attended the Scismic [1] webinar on How to Find and Apply to Industry Roles This follows on from last months webinar.

Some really useful tips here on what to look for, how to match skills to roles, how to emphasise your skills / experience / expertise to the job description. Different skills and types of roles between academic and industry experience and how you add these to your CV to gain the attention of the Hiring manager.

A really good webinar. I am adapting my notes as I am not looking at working in Biotech, nevertheless the idea of the informational interview could be really useful going forward.

So I recently attended the Scismic webinar on Informational Interviews. This follows on from the 'A summary of you' webinar from 7th May.

The webinar included an explanation on what an informational interview is, the purpose. preparation and how to go about setting on up. The difference between this and a formal interview process and the fact these interviews are about finding out about roles and not about asking for a job.

Some excellent tips were on the sort of questions to ask, the type of questions can be put in to four categories.

Further to my previous post on ansi weather

I wrote this, which asks for your location, and displays the weather.

In my previous post I was trying to use sed to clean up the output, this isn't needed as the -a option removes the colour coding from the output

ansiweather -a false -l Plymouth, UK >> weatherinfo.txt

Produces

Weather in Plymouth => -10 °C – Wind => 1.72 m/s NNW – Humidity => 62 % – Pressure => 1028 hPa

Which is far better.

so our new shell script is
