wicd-curses

wicd-curses is a console program that allows you to connect to wireless wifi networks. I found out about this after chatting on IRC with a few other users on freenode and mentioned I was having issues connecting to wifi from the command line.

This can be installed using apt install wicd-curses. A man page can be viewed with man wicd-curses.

Wicd-curses

As I am using Debian then the package information can be found here.

The above screenshot is from my desktop which does not have or even need wifi connection. But on my netbook this should show available wifi networks, and allow the one you want to be selected. You will probably need your wifi credentials e.g password etc to connect further.

Another step to seeing if I can actually use a computer directly from the command line without the need for a gui. I need to try and configure alpine to now send e-mail and I may be nearly there. However this isn’t really essential to my needs anyway.

Please feel free to discuss further on Mastodon

EP 4

So this week, Aral and Laura looked at how they live stream their episodes.

Laura talked about accessibility, using subtitles, transcripts and the various tools available to help with that.

Aral then talked about the different hardware / software used for live streaming, mixing video, etc. If you are interested in live streaming video then it is really worth watching for that,

Malware discovered on Computers given to children

Donate using Liberapay

The BBC has reported Malware found on laptops given out by government this report asks several important question as to why these laptops have not been wiped before giving away.

"Ideally users should reboot into safe mode and run a full scan with an anti-virus product," he said.

"However with this type of malware, it is advisable to seek professional assistance in order to ensure it has been correctly removed."

Is even more hilarious, to get a professional in to fix this issue will COST MONEY which is the one thing these families don't have.

Once again a scheme by our government has gone wrong.

First thing people should do when getting any device such as this is to wipe it and install a OS such as Debian, Mint or Ubuntu.

Employee Motivation

Donate using Liberapay

One of the nice things about LinkedIn, is that there are some really inspirational people on there, with some great advice.

Employee Motivation

This was posted earlier by Brigette Hyacinth makes some interesting and important points here about how Employers actions and behaviour can really have a positive or Negative impact on employee Motivation.

I am currently looking for work but I understand with this infographic is saying. Previous employers have been both good, others have been not so good.

If people leave their job, think about why, if a CV has gaps, think why someone may have left their last post. I left my last post to seek better opportunities, an employer who will actually value my skills.

I really hope that my current projects, and the experience and skills being developed actually count for something.

If you want the best out of people, make them feel valued, listen to them, and notice what skills, help them develop and you will get a better work force. Employees are people not just some number on an employee database.

Web Analytics

Donate using Liberapay

MATOMO

Take back control with Matomo – a powerful web analytics platform that gives you 100% data ownership.

Matomo is a privacy friendly alternative to Google analytics. Offering what looks like a good range of features with both free and paid for usage plans.

GOATCOUNTER

Easy web analytics. No tracking of personal data.

GoatCounter is an open source web analytics platform available as a hosted service (free for non-commercial use) or self-hosted app. It aims to offer easy to use and meaningful privacy-friendly web analytics as an alternative to Google Analytics

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

With more and more websites tracking users, collecting vast amounts of data, more and more people are becoming aware of this, not liking what is happening and starting to make a stand.

With the GDPR in the UK/EU, failing to protect user data and privacy now carries huge financial penalties, as well as, of course, reputational damage.

Time to take back control. Time for business to respect user privacy and data protection.

Interesting series

  • Do Not Track is a personalized documentary series about privacy and the web economy.

A FEW OTHERS

CONCLUSION

With a good choice of alternatives, there is now NO EXCUSES.
