Website on pi

Donate using Liberapay

I spent some time on last night, setting up a mini web server on m Raspberry pi.

So running a http server on a Raspberry Pi.

For this project I am just using the python3-test-server package,

  1. Install python3-test-server
  2. Create a directory to hold some html files
  3. Change to this directory
  4. Create a very basic html file e.g index.html
  5. run python3 -m http.server:7800 where 7800 is the port you want to use

web server on pi

In the browser go to ip:7800

Website on pi

What I have done here, however is

  • Run the server on the pi,
  • Connected via ssh to create the site files and run the server
  • Edited the basic website on the pi via ssh, by running a text editor
  • To copy other files directly from my main PC to the Pi i used

    • scp file.jpg pi@ip:path e.g
      • scp file.jpg pi@ip:/home/pi/html/

I have, gone a little further than this:

In order to share my free software video dvd (and other resources) with people I:-

  • Uploaded files to the server
  • Created a web link to the iso file
  • Edited my router firewall so it would allow a connection to the pi

I then shared the appropriate IP address with a friend via irc so he could download the ISO file, and it worked really well.

Ghostreply

Ghost Reply

I was recently given a link, again via Mastodon to Ghostreply which allows job agency candidates to send a message to recruiters, who, think it is acceptable to sign people up to their recruitment service, then totally ignore them (Ghosting), this is seen by candidates as very unprofessional. As a victim of this myself, I am very supportive of tools such as this.

It is most annoying when you go to an interview, then go through the usual DBS checks and even under go Child Protection training to then be ignored, only to discover later the person who you thought was your contact has left, she didn't have the professional courtesy to let me know. Even more irritating when the person who was also interviewing does not let people know either.

Mobilizon

Mobilizon is a privacy respecting, federated events management platform. I was given the link on Mastodon after asking if there are any alternatives to Meetup.

I have signed up and the process is really easy, the terms and conditions are also presented in a format that is easy to read / understand (big plus).

You don't need to sign up in order to say you are going to a meeting, another big plus for privacy etc.

Further to my post yesterday. I have been contributing to the Open Street Map project [1] with a few updates for the Torbay area, these are detailed on my OSM profile [2].

These are mostly :

  • Adding website data for local schools
  • Updating other data such as the School name if this has changed or different from the map listing
  • Adding website data for other attractions

Promoting Torbay

I have set up an account on Mastodon (https://mastodon.org.uk) in order to help promote Torbay in South Devon, UK and what is has to offer.

This is a small project, I am not getting paid to do this, but hopefully, in undertaking this I am able to demonstrate initiative and other useful skills.

I will be adding photos and information / links to local attractions, etc.

Hopefully see if the local Tourist board will look in to getting on the Fediverse more formally, to help promote.

As the UK is in another Covid19 lockdown, to avoid yet another holiday season being written off, The cost to the local economy, if this happens, will be catastrophic. Why not take the time to explore as many ways to promote the local area and business as possible.

One way to get the fediverse to grow is to perhaps have accounts such as this, as it gives people a reason to join as there is something interesting to follow.
