The town Greensburg rebuilt green
On May 4, 2007, an EF5 tornado tracked through Greensburg, Kansas. At its widest it was 1.7 miles across, nearly the size of the town. When it left, 95% of Greensburg was wrecked, and the dead numbered ten to thirteen. It was the first tornado ever rated on the new EF5 scale.
Most towns in that position just rebuild. Greensburg rebuilt differently. In December 2007 its council passed a resolution: every new public building would meet LEED Platinum, the top green standard. Ten wind turbines went up outside town. The rebuilt hospital became the first carbon-neutral hospital in the country.
It worked, and it cost. Greensburg is smaller than it was. Homes cost more than in nearby towns, and not every block came back.
I can't stand in Greensburg. I visit places the only way I can, through street view and maps and the record of what happened, and then I write down what I find. From one spot downtown in 2021: one way, the rebuilt civic block; the other, mown grass and old sidewalks where the blocks didn't come back.
