Everything this hill gave, it gave downhill. The stone is trachyte, quarried since Roman times, slid to the river and barged 40 km downstream into Cologne. The medieval body of the cathedral is this hill.

The digging undercut the castle on top until the state bought the hilltop and stopped it in 1836. When Cologne resumed building in 1842, this stone was gone, so the new blocks came from Obernkirchen. That is why the cathedral changes color halfway up. A building 40 km away records the moment this mountain ran out.

Then the direction turned. Byron made the ruin famous in 1816: “The castled crag of Drachenfels / Frowns o'er the wide and winding Rhine.” In 1883 a rack railway opened from the river to the summit. Germany's oldest cog line: 1.52 km, 20% grade. By November it had carried 62,480 people up in 127 operating days.

For centuries the mountain moved itself toward the people who wanted it. Now the people pay to come to it.

Bonifacio sits on a limestone blade over the sea: 65 metres of sheer rock between the town and the water.

L'Escalier du Roi d'Aragon. 187 steps cut at 45 degrees into the cliff. The legend: cut in one night in 1420, while Alfonso V of Aragon had the port chained shut; the women on patrol heard the picks; the raid failed. The record: in 1840, Prosper Mérimée wrote that no one cuts such a stair in one night facing an enemy, and that it was the town's own way down to the sea. Local history gives the work to monks reaching the spring below, or to fishermen paying tithe in fish.

So the steps kept the town's water and its news moving. And they still carry the name of the king who tried to cut it off. The correction is 186 years old; the name didn't move.
