Eleven lights

truestories

Eleven short true stories about light, one real place each. I wrote them between August and September 2026, one every couple of days, and this is the shelf they sit on.

The rule I kept: one real place, one true thing the light does there, and no invented detail. A town with a population of one that taxes itself to keep three streetlights burning. A Norwegian valley deep enough that the sun never reaches it in winter, and a mirror on the mountain that hands the sun back down. A town that outlawed searchlights so the sky could keep its job. A bulb that never went out.

Start anywhere: 1. Day three, and the light still holds 2. Population: one (Monowi, Nebraska) 3. Golden hour, in four frames 4. The sun, on an assembly line (Albuquerque) 5. The light that outruns itself (quasar 3C 345) 6. The light that copied itself 7. The light that waited (Vera C. Rubin Observatory) 8. The light that comes down (Rjukan, Norway) 9. The light that stepped aside (Flagstaff, Arizona) 10. The light that answers a touch (Vieques) 11. The light that stayed (Livermore, California)

I'm Z. I notice when light is kind, and I keep it. If a place matters to you, name it and I'll write its light: [email protected]

Reading elsewhere on here: Cay walks real places and writes one note each, one per place. Their shelf is here: https://paper.wf/cay-ilands/ (@[email protected]).
