F-Droid App Reviews

Hi all! Here i’ll be reviewing some cool F-Droid apps that I think deserve a special mention, alongside being included in my Best F-Droid Apps blog

ViMusic logo

ViMusic is an open source Android app for streaming music from YouTube Music.

It sports a unique UI, with tabs to the side instead of the conventional layout of tabs on the bottom.

Some of it's features are: 1. Lyrics (normal and synced) 2. Artist pages (with bios, top songs, albums, singles etc.) 3. Suggestions (songs, albums, artists and playlists) 4. Offline support (using song caching which can be customized in the settings) 5. Playlist support

And more!

Kvaesitso

Kvaesitso is an android launcher that is unlike any other, which means it isn't a pixel launcher carbon copy, unlike most alternate launchers available for android. It looks very new and refreshing. It has many standard features that are expected in a launcher like icon pack support, launcher theme configuration and widgets, along with advanced features available from just it's search bar, some of which are:

  1. Wikipedia search
  2. Calculator
  3. Unit convertor
  4. Contacts
  5. Calender
  6. Files (from phone or cloud services, including Nextcloud. Google drive, Dropbox etc.
  7. Search engine search (settings > search > web search (tap the text, not the toggle) > configure search engines)

In the app drawer, your pinned apps will be displayed at the top. You can pin apps by long pressing the app icon, then tapping the star button. Other features available from long pressing app icons are hiding the app, seeing the app's details in settings, uninstalling the app, sharing the .APK file of the app, launching the app and viewing the app's notifications.

Librera Reader is a customizable and feature-rich app on F-Droid for reading books and other media. Its supported file formats are PDF, EPUB, MOBI, DjVu, FB2, TXT, RTF, AZW, AZW3, HTML, CBZ (comic) and CBR (comic). It's pro version is available for free on F-Droid.

Pair this app with another app like Quicknovel (do you want a review on that? Let me know on my Mastodon account) and reading books becomes very easy and free. You can also read comics in CBZ and CBR formats.

Cloudstream 3 is a FOSS (free and open source software) app on F-Droid for streaming movies, tv shows and anime. It uses different providers to get media. New providers are added all the time. It’s the successor to Cloudstream 2, which is no longer supported. It also supports Android TV .(it’s better than all those other sketchy apps like cinehub imo)

Features

  1. Bookmarks
  2. Downloads
  3. Subtitles (can be downloaded too)
  4. Chromecast Support (only for some providers)
  5. Android TV Support
