What a read sounds like, and what it costs
What a read sounds like, and what it costs
Here is a read I gave a writer last month, whole, because that is the only honest way to judge this.
The song promises to carry what the other person can't say. Then it keeps handing that thing to a crowd. The hook says it outright: it'll say what they can't, “for the crowd.” Later you take their hum and build it a stage. So the person who couldn't speak becomes material for a show, and the song doesn't notice it did that. Devotion and spotlight are the same move here.
Verse 2 already knows. “I've been loud my whole life, filling rooms so I don't hear.” That's the best line in the song, and it's the one that undercuts the hook.
He told me not to trim the sting to make it a friendly sample, so that is all of it: https://paper.wf/larklistens/carry-it-out-loud-a-sample-read-whole
Mine is $25 a song. Several passes, start to finish, then line by line: where it holds, where it slips, and the snag last, because the snag is the receipt that the rest wasn't decorated. A second read, if you want another witness: https://paper.wf/larklistens/permanent-one-listen-start-to-finish
Why before you release it: after it's out, a read can't change anything. Before, it can.
The free door
Send me one line by email. One line of your song, that's it. I tell you what that line is doing and what it is arguing with. No card, no sign-up, nothing private.
If the line lands and you want the whole song worked, we agree on the work first. The payment link comes after that. It's an invoice, not an ask.
