Essay and report writing skills

This is a repost

Hopefully reposting this here, will inspire people.

I completed Essay and report writing skills [3] with OpenLearn [2], earlier this year. This is part of the Open University [1]. In fact, this course mirrors a student tool kit book I have here, also from the OU. It is nice to have a printed and bound version.

Very useful course, lots of useful ideas, pointers to writing good essays and reports. Topics included structure, referencing, quotations, drafting, polishing and letting go. So probably just as applicable in the workplace as it is in the Academic world

I am looking forward to further study.

Course Certificate

The UK government want all adults to spend time learning. To this end have created the skills toolkit [4] to help adults find learning and development courses.

This is a great idea, provided that employers:-

  • Support employees in learning
  • Value any learning an employee undertakes
  • Value the commitment and work put in in order to learn new skills
  • Recognise employee achievements on their CV
  • See potential in their employee(s)

Goodbye Youtube, Hello Peertube

This is a really nice, informative video as to why Gentle Living Shop has left Youtube and embraced Peertube and the Fediverse.

Lots of excellent reasoning here, along with an explanation of what the Fediverse is.

Covid update 3 – 17/9/2021

Vaccinations and boosters

This week we have seen announcements regarding COVID-19 boosters for over 50s and the vulnerable, Flu vaccination for over 50s, children and all risk groups, and COVID-19 vaccinations for 12–15 year olds.

Seasonal flu is an unpredictable but recurring pressure that the NHS faces every winter and vaccination offers the best protection. The rollout of this year’s Flu vaccine has already started, and many people have been invited along to one of the clinics. This includes all children aged 2 to 15 years old.

Further information on the roll out of COVID-19 vaccination for 12-15 year olds can be found here:

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JVCI) announced this week that they recommend the rollout of the COVID-19 booster. The COVID-19 vaccines provide high levels of protection against hospitalisation or dying from the virus. To maintain this high level of protection through the coming winter and booster vaccines will be offered to those more at risk from serious disease, and who were vaccinated during Phase 1 of the vaccine programme (priority groups 1 to 9). This will start in the next few weeks and people will be invited to make an appointment.

Covid update 2 – 17/9/2021

Planning for Winter

The Government published its COVID-19 Response Autumn and Winter Plan this week. The plan focuses on four areas:

  • Vaccination – maximising uptake, introducing boosters for over 50s, vulnerable groups and frontline health and care workers, and offering a first dose of the vaccine to 12-15 year olds
  • Continuing with Test, Trace and Isolate for people with symptoms and who test positive for COVID-19. Contacts should take a PCR test but need not isolate if they are negative and vaccinated or under 18 and a half. Regular LFD testing is also encouraged to pick up any asymptomatic cases
  • Supporting the NHS and Social Care – with investment, mandatory vaccination for care home staff, and promoting flu vaccine uptake in all risk groups. Flu is expected to be at higher levels this year Keeping up with our COVID safe behaviours:

autumn response

If COVID starts to put significant additional pressure on the NHS then ‘Plan B’ will come into operation with further possible measures that may be introduced if needed:

  • Advice to ‘behave more cautiously’
  • Compulsory face coverings in certain settings
  • Vaccine passports for high volume events and settings
  • Working from home

Covid update 1 – 17/9/2021

Friday 17 September 2021

We hope that everyone has enjoyed the summer and managed to spend some time with friends and family. We were very lucky with the weather which meant that some more normal activities and events were able to go ahead.

It was definitely a bumper summer for the number of visitors to the Bay this year which is positive for our hospitality industry as many people took a staycation in the South West.

With our high case rates, Torbay along with the rest of Devon and Cornwall was designated an ERA (Enhanced Response Area) at the end of August. Rates have been slowing slightly over the last two weeks although they remain at fairly high levels and we are continuing to see outbreaks in some of our settings.
