Biotech & Meditech Jobs

If you've been looking for jobs in the Biotech or Medtech industries, do you ever notice they often use terms in their job descriptions that don't feel very intuitive to you? For example – if you have experience with protein purification, chromatography techniques and filtration then you most likely qualify for roles that use the term “Downstream Process Development”!

If you're used to describing yourself in academic terms, come learn the language you need to describe yourself in industry.

Sign up and join us on February 28th at 5pm ET below.

Wise advice to employers

This was posted to LinkedIn by Brigette Hyacinth

Brigette makes a very interesting and important point with this.

ME: Candidate accepted another offer.
CLIENT: I thought she really liked our company.
ME: Yes, she did
CLIENT: I don’t understand why she would throw away a great future here.
ME: She is very talented. She will have a great future wherever she chooses.
CLIENT: But we’re #1 in our space!

Companies need to realize interviews are two-way streets. You are not only choosing the candidate, the candidate is choosing you as well. While you are taking 3+ months to hire someone (looking for perfection) putting candidates through multiple interviews and tests - another company recognized her worth and made her an offer far above the market range. If you want the best talent improve your hiring processes. Candidates have negotiating power too.

Comment

Personal experience seems to point to employers delaying getting back and delaying moving what should be a fairly simple process forward. This leaves people not knowing what is going on, sometimes for weeks at a time.

Employees who are keen to make a start will say so, we appreciate that there are processes. This is about the endless waiting and waiting for people to get back and keep us updated.

Dark Matter Galaxy

We are always finding something new in the Universe. This is a discover from Chinese astronomers, who have found a dark galaxy 2% Hydrogen and 98 % dark matter.

There is another Mastodon post here, with a link to the paper and more information on the FAST observatory.

Record British Gas profits

Centrica who own British gas have announced huge profits. This is at a time when costs of food and everything are rising, people are having to choose between heating homes and eating a good meal.

BBC centrica

Discussions on bonus payments have been delayed, with prices set to rise in April taxpayers are facing fuel price rises and more tax payers money being used to help people pay fuel bills.

Profits before people, this is going to result in a huge backlash at some point, which can't come soon enough.

We can't keep blaming the war in Ukraine for this, it us pure greed, especially as we apparently only get about 3% of our gas from Russia anyway.

Home Chemistry 12 – Red Cabbage indicator

I am slowly starting to build up a collection of chemicals we can use as part of experiments at home and or the STEM group.

So in addition to universal indicator paper, Jess from the library is going to make some red cabbage indicator, which we can use to test if substances are acid or alkali.

I have some 1M Citric Acid prepared, and intend to do the same for Bicarbonate of soda, so that there is at least 1 of each available.

So back to indicaotrs, As detailed here Red Cabbage, can be used to make an indicator.

Red Cabbage indicator

We should then be able to use this at the STEM group and the library for various science based experiments, especially during British Science Week.

This will prove very useful and will complement the use of universal indicator papers.

The next STEM group meeting is 11th March.
