August STSCI Lecture

The next space telescope science institute lecture is on the 2nd August. The topic of this is Webb's First Look: Images and Spectra from NASA's Newest Great Observatory

We will also be watching this lecture as part of the August STEM Group meeting on Saturday 13th August.

Description

Speaker: Alexandra Lockwood (Space Telescope Science Institute)

The Webb Space Telescope has recently showcased its spectacular first images and is now ready to do incredible science! It has been a long road to get here, including meticulous planning, exacting execution, and an amazing amount of teamwork! Join Dr. Alex Lockwood as she talks about the journey from launch to commissioning, explores details of the first images and spectra, and helps us understand the awesome scientific potential of NASA's newest great observatory.

Testing Big blue button July 2022

I am involved in helping to test big blue button. I just noticed something odd, if I use the custom layout from the “Layout Settings Modal” option, then I can also see propagate layout.

With the other options the propagate option doesn't appear.

Not too sure if this is a bug or it is meant to happen. I have made this Vokoscreen video to try and illustrate. It also makes it easier to share what the issue seems to be.

This is happening on a recent beta build, installed on the Faircam server.

Covid 19 Origins

One of the early theories about Covid 19, was that it originated in a Wuhan market, where humans and animals were in close contact.

Recent research seems to have confirmed this. There are several mainstream media (newspaper) articles on this. I decided to try and find a more useful source. so this article on Web MD seems a good initial source.

I think the above articles are also peer reviewed, so they are a more credible source, plus it is far better to read the original articles / papers than news paper reports which end up inaccurate, if the Journalist is not a specialist or just in some case lazy and sloppy.

The sense about science website has some good information and advise with regard to asking for evidence for research purposes. Along with this is an excellent introduction to the peer review process, so well worth reading.

It is good, that we are finally seeing the results of actual research in to this, and while it probably won't put conspiracy theories to bed, it may influence policies etc that are hopefully based on researched based evidence.

The dangers of stupidity

An important digital skill is the ability to research and look up and comprehend information. A recent Daily Mail article, about a receptionist, who for some reason didn't seem to think breathing in Nitrous Oxide was in any way dangerous or harmful.

So an easy & simple duckduckgo search gave me the Materials Safety Data Sheet for this gas. The safety sheet gives clear warnings on neurological damage.

Inhalation : Can cause central nervous system (CNS) depression. May cause drowsiness or dizziness.

So she is kind of suggesting people don't do this, for the very reasons started in the safety sheet. Perhaps if she had read that fist, then the problems would not have happened in the first place.

I had a Chemistry set from the age of 11, even the manual for that gave warnings about NOT breathing in products or by-products from experiments.

Before I am told what people do to their own bodies has nothing to do with me, I would agree. When the result starts to impact others, then people have the right to say something. In this case, an act of stupidity, results in the NHS being put under more pressure, which impacts everyone.

James Webb Update 19/7/2022

The first set of images from the JWST were really impressive. Hopefully we will get more shortly. So check the website on a regular basis for updates. At the next STEM Group meeting, we are aiming to have a JWST theme, with a recording of the August Space Telescope Science Institute lecture.

Cornell research seeks to elevate home care workers

An interesting piece of research from Cornell University. While this is in the USA, it seems they have a similar issue as we do here with care workers feeling undervalued.

The UK has a serious recruitment and retention problem in this sector too.

Overlooked, undervalued: Cornell research seeks to elevate home care workers

Code Club 16/7/2022 Write up

It was fairly quiet again today, probably due to the weather. Nevertheless it was a good, productive session and attendees left having learnt a few more skills.

Lots of good coding with Hour of code activities too.

So very positive going forward.

  • The next Code Club will be on Saturday 6th August 2022 @ Paignton Library,
  • Next STEM Group meeting is Saturday 13th August 2022.
    • Part the plan for this STEM session is to look at the August Space Telescope Science Institute lecture about the James Webb Telescope lecture video.

Are DBS Checks worth the paper they are written on

Schools in the United Kingdom are duty bound by law to “Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people”. This does not just apply to schools but other institutions, who look after or work with children and young people in some capacity, including the vulnerable.

Over the past few years, we seem to have seen evidence of failure to protect people.

I have previously mentioned “Everyone's Invited” and the catalogue of failures that meant children and young people were subjected to rape and sexual assault by other students, what is worse, is that the very teachers charged with welfare did nothing effective, ignored victims or made the victim feel they were lying and it was their fault.

It seems, that despite the usual sound bytes, nothing has changed. The following are two recent BBC news articles

This is the tip of the iceberg. There seems be endless failures, endless excuses and endless use of “Lessons will be leaned” I feel it is time to stop making excuses and time for real action.

It appears the UK has more problems, a 2013 BBC report Children 'already two years behind at start of school' However fast forward to post pandemic 2022, the Daily Mail report from July 2022 Lost children of lockdown reported the same sort of problems, As this was happening pre-covid then I do question if Covid is actually to blame for this. .

Neglect is part of keeping children safe in education. This is a statutory document for all staff working with children, which defines neglect as:-

Neglect: the persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or
psychological needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of the child’s health or development.

If, for the moment we disregard those with physical / learning disabilities (as they have a reasonable reason) and just look at those for whom there seems to little or no reason why they should be wearing a nappy etc at 4. We need to ask serious questions.

Why this this happening, who are we recruiting in to these positions of trust, who we also entrust to act in the INTEREST OF THE CHILD.

Granted parents need support, so lets support them with properly funded schemes. However there has to be a point where the system steps in and removes the child.

Another example of failure

So, none of the people who failed children have been sacked, this means they are free to get jobs elsewhere, and probably allow the same to happen again. In Without a police caution, warning or a criminal conviction, nothing will show up on DBS checks, not sure how other background checks end up with heads of children;s services, being offered employment, when they have failed in their last post.

DBS checks are just one part of safer recruitment, but it is VITAL that we can trust this system.

We need to get a grip. After 12 years of Conservative rule nothing seems to have changed.

Code Club 16/7/2022

Next code club is :- Saturday 16th July 2022. 10am to 12:00 Paignton Library & Information Centre

So more of the same,

  • Scratch
  • HTML/CSS,
  • Python.
  • Hour Of code
  • Computer audit, we need to figure out which PC's have issues, so I will attempt to undertake some of this during the session.
  • Whatever else we can do during the session
