Paignton Library STEM Group – July 2022

The July STEM group meeting will take place on Saturday 9/7/2022. As with previous events, this will be a mix of Science, Technology, and Engineering subjects along with discussions and a look at projects brought along to the event.

Due to talks / discussions not taking place at the June meeting, we are hoping these will take place at the July event instead.

Schedule (talk stream)

  • Talk on James Clerk Maxwell
  • Inside a computer This will lead to a discussion on computer hardware, right to repair and how our freedom to do what we want computers is being restricted, this includes making harder to install replacement / alternative operating systems

We can watch the video then have a discussion around this.

Schedule (projects stream)

As we are a bring you own projects group, then attendees can bring what they are working on, or perhaps carry on with what they are doing at Code Club for example.

SplitVT

Virtual Terminal Splitter

One of the advantages of having good books on GNU / Linux, especially the command line, is the small gems you find out about.

For many people, the screen and or tmux commands are the 'go to' if users want to split a terminal window or console in to sections. This allows one screen to display several things at the same time.

The command 'splitvt' does just this, simply splits the screen horizontally so there is a top and bottom window. To switch between the sections users can use ctrl-w. To exit, type exit in each of the windows, and you return back to your normal terminal or console.

SPLIT VT

Granted, this lacks the many features that the other two offer, but sometimes this doesn't really matter. I still recommand learning tmux or screen.

If you want to learn more about this, please feel free to chat on the Tuxiversity IRC channel. We are still working on the main site but the chat works.

Stamp out spiking

Drink spiking is becoming a huge issue world wide. This is now not simply adding a drug to drinks, but has now included people being injected directly (which is also assault).

We need to stamp this out.

Dawn Dines, is leading this campaign and runs training courses for bar managers to help raise awareness and know what to do if this happens. Please see links below for lots of resources etc.
