Why we can't trust BIG tech
This was posted to Mastodon
*Microsoft is phoning home the content of your PowerPoint slides
Regardless of how hard we try, putting our trust and data in the hands of big tech, who hide what their software is really doing, is never going to help anyone
It is really time people woke up, the best thing to do is to switch to a free and open source replacement for your office software.
There are lots of alternatives to the main social media platforms if enough people switch, then decentralised will be MAINSTREAM and users will have their data where users should want it, under their own control.
Keep data in house or at least in the GDPR jurisdiction
Overleaf labs
A few feature on overleaf gives users the chance to test out new features. I have recently joined Overleaf labs.
This should be really cool, as I am on Mastodon there are a few of us that use LaTeX / Overleaf so this could be a good place to chat and swap ideas.

Fediverse Trunk
Just reposting this as since Elon Musk bought Twitter, there has been a big migration over to Mastodon.
Joining a new network can be daunting, especially if you don't know anyone. This is especially true with decentralised networks, such as the Fediverse.
However with the Fediverse help is at hand, in the form of Trunk. The website helps you find other users by interest, gives you their id so you can search and follow them.

What is Peertube?
Peertube is a video sharing platform, similar to youtube, but with a focus on privacy and decentralization. As Peertube uses Activity pub then content can be shared and federated to other services within the Fediverse.
I tried to post the video below, but for some reason it is not working properly.
Feel free to get in touch if you need more help on this, details are on my contact page.

Changing Scratch Interface Language.
One of the advantages with Scratch is that it has a really nice interface, it is also available in a range of different languages.
Before the last Code Club I asked the tutor who runs the group in the room next door to the IT group. While they are learning English, I decided to ask if any of his group are interested in Code Club.
I am posting this to illustrate how to change the language of the Scratch front end, so children who speak other language can access this resource easily.

One of the accounts on Mastodon gives stats on how many new users have joined.
+66,669 in the last day
Pretty impressive.
Mastodon Getting Started
For those of you who are still using old fashioned social media such as Meta, there is another way. With privacy and data concerns constantly being discussed the time for a platform that respects your rights as a user, respects privacy is needed.
However we have one already in the form of Mastodon, which is a decentralised platform and is part of the Fediverse.
If you switch to Mastodon. it can be confusing at first. The community are really keen to get more users, to this end, there are lots of great guides to help you get started.

This video is a nice introduction
Tik Tok Can be read by China
TikTok says staff in China can access UK and EU user data
This has been discussed recently and it seems that our fears have been confirmed. The above has serious implications for privacy as well as data protection and perhaps safeguarding.
It goes to show we really do need to get rid of big tech, as they simply can't be trusted and care more about data and the associated income than about users.
