The trees are coming back.

That’s what you say when someone asks. Blight goes through, takes its share, then you’re left with what’s got the strength or the luck. We’ve seen it before. My father did, and his before him. You cut hard, burn what’s bad, and wait.

We lost near a third of the orchard last time. Not all at once. Just enough each year to make you wary. The older trees went first, then a few you thought would hold. We did what we were told. Took advice. Left the rest quiet.

This year should have been thin.

Instead it’s been heavy. Too heavy in places. Branches set early and didn’t seem to mind it. Apples coming on together across rows that never used to match. Even an old tree we’d half written off has carried more than it should.

You don’t argue with a good year. You just work longer.

The apples fall clean. No wind worth noting. No knock from birds. You go down in the morning and they’re there, laid close round the trunks as if someone’s been careful where they’ve dropped them.

They’re sound. Not a mark on them. Flesh clean and sweet. The sort you’re glad to see after a bad run.

But they keep coming.

We cleared the ground proper one evening, right back to the roots. Came out at first light and there were more there. Not new growth that I could see. Just apples, same size, same colour, set down neat enough.

I marked a branch with twine to be sure I wasn’t going soft. Came back later and the twine was still there. Ground below full again.

No one’s playing tricks. There’d be no point to it. And no one’s lost anything. If anything there’s more fruit than we can shift. The press is running every day now and the vats are near full already.

We’ve started leaving some trees alone. Not pruning as close. Not clearing every fallen leaf. A few that were meant to come out this winter are staying where they are.

Doesn’t feel right to press them too hard just now. That’s how I’ve put it to myself.

The cider’s good. Better than last year, that’s certain. Customers are pleased. That should be the end of it.

Still, I don’t like how quick it’s all turned. Feels like they’ve gone from holding on to giving it all at once, without much warning.

We’re keeping a closer watch than usual.

En la 1-a de majo de 1925, dum Mussolini jam regantis, itala pensistaro la faŝisman reĝimon denuncis per malferma letero. La subskribintoj (sciencistoj, filozofoj, skribistoj kaj artistoj) alprenis starpunkton por defendo de la bazegaj principoj de libera socio: la regado de la leĝo, personaj liberecoj kaj la sendependeco de penso, kulturo, arto kaj scienco. Ilia defio aperta, kaj personale riskega, antaŭ la brutala trudo de faŝisma idearo elmontris ke opozicio estis ne nur ebla sed bezona. Faŝismo neniam malaperis sed iomtempe entenatis. Malgraŭe, en la du lastatempaj dekjaroj, ni ĉeestis novan ondon de dekstregaj movadoj, ofte kun trajtoj klare faŝismaj: atakoj kontraŭ popolregaj normoj kaj institucioj, plifortigata naciismo kunplektata al rasisma retoriko, ordonemaj impetoj kaj sistemaj atencoj kontraŭ la rajtoj de tiuj kiuj ne konformas al aŭtoritato tradicia kaj artefarita bazata sur regularo religia, seksa kaj genra. Tiaj movadoj reaperis tutmonde, eĉ en daŭremaj popolregejoj, kie ĝenerala elreviĝo pri politika nekapableco trakti malegalecojn kaj socian eksigon ree expluatatas de novaj ordonemuloj. Diventa così vegetariana, termine che viene usato dall’autrice alla stregua di quanto fa Carol J. Adams in “Carne da macello”, comprendendo nel vegetarismo anche l’esclusione dei derivati animali come latte e uova: nei fatti la vegetariana si sarebbe potuta chiamare anche la vegana.

Questa scelta appare subito perturbante e foriera di conseguenze, che leggiamo dalle reazioni delle persone che stanno vicino alla protagonista: “La vegetariana si limita a raccontare della svolta dietistica di Yeong-hye, una casalinga mansueta che a causa di un sogno svuota il proprio congelatore di tutte le scorte di carne. Lo fa escludendola, privilegiando tre punti di vista insensibili alla sua scelta: il marito, il cognato, la sorella, tutt’e tre principalmente preoccupati dagli effetti di questa novità sulla propria vita”. Nessuna delle persone che sono vicine a Yeong-hye, infatti, riesce a capacitarsi della sua decisione: non la capiscono, ne soffrono, vorrebbero intervenire per il suo stesso bene. In questi approcci a volte accorati a volte violenti, emerge innanzitutto la prepotenza dello sguardo maschile sulle (persone socializzate come) donne nella nostra società. Il marito perde anche quel grigio interesse formale che aveva per la moglie, dettato esclusivamente dall’espletamento dei ruoli sociali e di genere che eseguiva per il proprio appagamento; il padre, un veterano della guerra in Vietnam, cerca subito di forzare il desiderio della figlia intervenendo con misure spicce. Per entrambi il capriccio di Yeong-hye non ha senso, e del resto lei stessa dice loro che non possono capire.

Ma qual è la natura del sogno che porta la protagonista a diventare vegetariana/vegana? È qualcosa di potente e viscerale, un intervento che sconvolge il corpo della donna, che è costretta a riconsiderarlo radicalmente:

“Un grumo formato da urla e gemiti aggrovigliati, intrecciati fra loro uno strato dopo l’altro. È per la carne. Ho mangiato troppa carne. Le vite degli animali che ho divorato si sono tutte piantate lì. Il sangue e la carne, tutti quei corpi macellati sono sparpagliati in ogni angolo del mio organismo, e anche se i resti fisici sono stati espulsi, quelle vite sono ancora cocciutamente abbarbicate alle mie viscere”. p.46

Nella seconda parte del libro entra in scena il cognato di Yeong-hye, un artista mediocre, che viene subito attratto dalla metamorfosi della donna. Questa attrazione è ambigua, il fascino del divenire vegetale, pianta e albero della protagonista viene recepito, da un punto di vista maschile, come oggetto di possesso. Tutti gli interventi nei confronti della protagonista, dunque, radicalizzano il processo in atto nel suo corpo. Il cognato si eccita nel vederla nuda e dipinta di fiori, con la voce narrante (questa volta esterna ai personaggi) che osserva:

“Era un corpo da cui era stata gradualmente eliminata ogni superfluità. Mai prima di allora i suoi occhi si erano posati su un corpo del genere, un corpo che diceva tanto pur essendo soltanto se stesso”. p.79

Nella terza e ultima parte, infatti, l’unica persona che sembra avvicinarsi più delle altre alla metamorfosi di Yeong-hye è la sorella, che ha impresse nella memoria le scene di violenza familiare esercitata dal patriarca veterano di guerra. Anche la sorella cercherà di fermare il processo di divenire-albero, ma con uno sguardo decisamente meno violento e possessivo:

“È il tuo corpo, puoi trattarlo come ti pare. L’unico territorio in cui sei libera di fare come preferisci. Ma anche questo non va come volevi” p. 154

Il libro, che è valso alla scrittrice coreana un riconoscimento internazionale, affronta in modo radicale delle tematiche che il femminismo ha saputo cogliere e legare tra loro: lo sguardo maschile, la violenza patriarcale, il rifiuto della violenza sugli altri animali, la sofferenza insita nella trasformazione di un corpo che non vuole essere più visto come un mero oggetto. Se la società è organizzata per banalizzare il possesso sui corpi femminili, allora ogni via di fuga non potrà che sembrare legata a qualche forma di disturbo mentale, di malattia, di nevrosi. La scienza, si sa, è in larga parte asservita al dominio patriarcale, per cui nel romanzo i medici si dibattono inutilmente al capezzale di Yeong-hye, incapaci di comprendere l’essenza del suo gesto di fuga dal corpo incarnato: un gesto di liberazione.

La lettura di questo libro mi ha molto colpito, per la crudezza delle immagini e per il contenuto che parte da una scelta di vita che condivido con la protagonista del romanzo. Viviamo in una società che ha reso industriale e standardizzato il massacro giornaliero di miliardi di animali per il consumo umano. A fronte di questa “normalità”, una dieta vegetale viene vista ancora con sospetto. Chiudo questa breve recensione pensando ai miliardi di anime di mucche, polli, galline, pesci che non vediamo, non consideriamo, così come il cognato di Yeong-hye vedeva nel corpo della donna un oggetto sessuale da possedere o uno spunto per la sua arte maschile, una tela da dipingere. Non vediamo queste anime, non le riconosciamo, ma la violenza esercitata su di loro si accumula, si coagula nella nostra società come un enorme blocco che non può che avere nefaste conseguenze anche sulle nostre vite, dentro i nostri corpi.
