Mein Schlüsselerlebnis zum Verständnis des weltweiten Aufstiegs der populistischen Nationalismen ereigenete sich im Frühjahr 2020. Im Lockdown nach Ausbruch der Covid-19-Pandemie sagte ein mir bis dahin unauffäliger Nachbar beim Frischluftschnappen im Hof: “Ich glaube nicht, dass so viele Menschen an dem Virus sterben. Es gibt da so Seiten im Internet.”
Zum einen war die Situation leicht verständlich: die Folgen des Pandemie-Einbruchs waren so drastisch, dass er sie verleugnete. Die psychische Motivation war ebenso offenkundig: “wenn es nicht wahr ist, muss ich mich nicht ändern”.
Zum anderen war das Gespräch erschreckend: denn jede Fortsetzung war sinnlos. Als Tatsache praktisch beweisen kann man nur seine direkt erreichbare Umwelt, alles andere ist #Kommunikation. In der Kommunikation sind Behauptungen auf #Begründungen angewiesen. Und wenn sich jemand der Schlüssigkeit von #Argumenten durch ein schlichtes “glaube ich nicht” verweigert, bricht die Kommunikation ab (oder irrlichtert ziellos weiter).
Die Covid-19-Pandemie war ein Katalysator für den populistischen #Nationalismus. Dieser hatte schon nach der #Finanzkrise 2008 erheblich an Zustimmung gewonnen, als radikale Alternative zur #Demokratie. Die Finanzkrise hatte offenkundig werden lassen, dass es eine Elite tatsächlich gibt. Denn die Schäden und Belastungen trafen ökonomisch Schwächere (sowohl individuell als auch staatlich), doch im Bankensektor schien niemand im juristischen Sinne schuldig zu sein. Es gab keine Gerichtsverfahren oder politisch einschneidenden Eingriffe, um etwa die Kosten der Krise bei den Profiteur:innen des Wertpapierhandels einzutreiben. In diesem Moment versagte die Demokratie, weil sie offensichtlicher Ungerechtigkeit tatenlos zusah, oder sogar noch rechtfertigte. Sie untergrub die von ihr versprochene #Gleichheit.
Der populistische Nationalismus sammelte fast alle Unzufriedenen, die man gegen das System mobilisieren konnte. Die wenigen linken Alternativen (wie etwa Syriza in Griechenland) scheiterten daran, dass die Demokratie tatsächlich ein #System ist: nämlich eine komplexe Organisation voneinander abhängiger Teile. Es lässt nicht zu, dass nur eine Komponente oder nur ein lokaler Ort sich grundlegend ändert, weil in der Weltwirtschaft alles vernetzt ist und Wechselwirkungen aufeinander hat. Für grundlegende Veränderungen braucht es immer eine kritische Masse.
Eine solche kritische Masse bilden, unterstützt von “Social Media”, aber mittlerweile die populistischen Nationalismen. Die Bereitschaft zur Verleugnung, um Anpassungszwänge abzuwehren, vermischt sich in gefährlicher Form mit der Wut von Enttäuschten. Enttäuschung und die Erlaubnis zu aggressivem Hass ergeben eine teuflische Mischung.
Die #noafd halte ich für brandgefährlich. Denn sollte sie an Regierungsgewalt gelangen, bliebe ihr gar nichts anderes übrig, als ihre Diskriminierungen, Unterdrückungen und Vertreibungen umzusetzen – denn ein alternatives politisches Programm haben sie nicht. Um ihre Wähler:innen bei Stange zu halten, müssten sie ihren Hass soweit wie möglich in die Tat umsetzen.

Le jugement est quasi unanime, porté par nos proches nouvellement passés à l'âge adulte, enfants, petits-enfants, nièces ou neveux: l'incurie des boomers, coupables après avoir joui sans entrave, de laisser derrière eux un monde sans avenir Marion Messina, Marianne, 6 janvier 2023. Certes, après les carnages des guerres napoléoniennes, de 1870, 1914-1918 et 1939-1945, les boomers constituent la première génération à n'avoir pas connu la guerre directement sur son territoire. Mais le reste du constat mériterait d'être plus nuancé.
Difficile toutefois de questionner les convictions d'une personne que l'on aime et que l'on respecte ou d'infléchir la radicalité de ses jugements de jeune adulte. Tentons à tout le moins de mettre à sa disposition des faits qu'elle semblerait méconnaître.
Tout d'abord qu'entend-on par “boomers”?
Statistiquement les “boomers” représentent la part de la population née en Occident entre 1945 et 1960. -Certaines statistiques présentent un panel de personnes nées entre 1947 et 1964 ou 65-. Il s'agit donc de personnes qui avaient vingt ans grosso modo entre le milieu des années soixante et le milieu des années quatre-vingts: les plus âgées ont joué un rôle de premier plan en 1968, à l'instar de Daniel Cohn-Bendit qui avait alors 23 ans, aux côtés de leurs aînés, Alain Geismar (né en 1939), Alain Krivine (né en 1941) ou Jacques Sauvageot (né en 1943).
Jouir sans entrave : les années soixante-dix
Influencée par le cinéma de la nouvelle vague – Jean-Luc Godard (1930-2022), François Truffaut (1932-1984)...–, par les figures de la Beat Generation popularisées par le roman On the Road de Jack Kerouak (1957), la décennie 1970, a vu l'éclosion d'un contre-modèle de société, héritier des événements de 1968. La rapide diffusion de la pilule contraceptive autorisait le renversement des codes sociaux (et notamment avec la pratique de l'amour libre, la redécouverte des sagesses orientales et la création de communautés de vie pensées comme des alternatives à l'institution du mariage. Mais cet élan sociétal se heurtera simultanément à une réalité économique implacable. Le premier choc pétrolier de 1973 entraînera dans son sillage la fin des trente glorieuses, cette prospérité industrielle de l'Occident qui s'appuyait sur de l'énergie bon marché : chômage, précarité, déclassement constitueront le socle d'un discours qui ne cessera de s'amplifier, à la recherche d'un paradis perdu.
Les années quatre-vingts: les années Mitterrand.
L'élection de François Mitterrand en 1981 suscite un formidable enthousiasme. Elle ouvre les portes du pouvoir à l'Union de la Gauche qui commence à mettre en oeuvre ses 110 propositions pour la France dont l'essentiel est réalisé sur les premières années de son mandat (Le Dauphiné 10 mai 2021) : abolition de la peine de mort, en dépit de l'hostilité alors majoritaire dans l'opinion française (1981), reconnaissance des droits des homosexuels, nationalisation de quarante banques et d’une trentaine d’entreprises, semaine de travail de 39 heures cinquième semaine de congés payés (1982), abaissement de l'âge de la retraite de 65 à 60 ans (1983).
Ici encore, la hausse du chômage (de 5,1% de la population 1980 à 7,9% 1985) source Insee 2016, et les trois dévaluations successives du Franc en octobre 1981, juin 1982 et mars 1983 obligeront le gouvernement à changer de politique et engager le “tournant de la rigueur” sous la houlette de Jacques Delors. Alors que le chômage et l'exclusion gagnent toutes les catégories de la population, l'humoriste et comédien Michel Colucci crée les Restaurants du Cœur, plus connus sous le nom de Les Restos du Cœur.

✅ Stuffed Grape Leaves (Waraka Enab / Mahshi) -
Servings: 5 – 7 people
Prep Time: About 1 hour
Cooking Time: 1.5 to 2 hours
Ingredients:
1. Grape Leaves:
- 1 kg grape leaves (fresh or preserved)
2. Rice Filling:
- 1 kg short-grain rice (Egyptian or similar)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
- 1 small cup olive oil
- 1 small cup pomegranate molasses
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp chicken bouillon powder (optional, to taste)
- 2 tbsp turmeric
- 1 tbsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp mixed spices (7-spice or allspice)
- Chopped parsley (optional, to taste)
3. For the Pot Base & Cooking:
- 1 onion, sliced into circles
- 1 tomato, sliced into circles
- 1 potato, sliced into circles
- 1 small cup olive oil
- 1 small cup pomegranate molasses
- Salt (to taste)
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- Juice of 2 lemons (added 15 minutes before finishing)
- Hot water (enough to cover the rolls)
Instructions:
Blanch the Grape Leaves:
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 tbsp salt.
- Add the grape leaves in batches and blanch for about 2 minutes until soft.
- Remove and place in a colander or tray to cool. Repeat until all leaves are done.
Prepare the Rice Filling:
- Wash the rice well, then soak it in hot water for 10 minutes. Drain completely.
- In a large bowl, mix the drained rice with:
- Chopped onion and tomato
- Olive oil + pomegranate molasses
- Tomato paste, salt, chicken bouillon, turmeric, black pepper, and mixed spices
- Chopped parsley (if using)
- Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
Rolling the Grape Leaves:
- Place a grape leaf flat (shiny side down).
- Put a small amount of rice filling near the bottom center.
- Fold the sides inward, then roll tightly into a small cylinder (don’t overfill).
- Repeat with all the leaves.
Assembling the Pot:
- In the bottom of a large pot, arrange the onion slices, then tomato slices, then potato slices.
- Neatly arrange the stuffed grape leaf rolls on top (pack them tightly).
- Mix 1 small cup olive oil + 1 small cup pomegranate molasses + salt + tomato paste and pour over the rolls.
- Add hot water until it completely covers the rolls.
Cooking:
- Place a heavy plate or lid on top of the rolls to keep them pressed down.
- Cook on high heat until the water boils.
- Once boiling, reduce to very low heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours.
- 15 minutes before it’s done, add the juice of 2 lemons.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve hot with yogurt or a fresh salad on the side.
Tips:
- Taste and adjust salt and acidity before closing the pot.
- If using preserved (jarred) grape leaves, rinse them well multiple times to reduce saltiness.
- Don’t overstuff the leaves to prevent them from bursting while cooking.
Garnish with pomegranate seeds and lemon wedges when serving, according to your preference.
